Saint Thomas (Minn.) at South Dakota State

BROOKINGS, S.D. (Interstat) — South Dakota State and Saint Thomas (Minn.) meet Sunday afternoon at Erv Huether Field in the finale of a four-game Summit League series.

First pitch is set for 2 p.m. under cloudy skies with a temperature of 57 degrees.

The Jackrabbits (15-27) have dropped four of their last five games after Saturday’s 4-2 loss to the Tommies. Saint Thomas (9-34) snapped a four-game losing streak in the series with that victory, following a 16-13 win by South Dakota State in Friday’s opener.

The Tommies’ recent success has been fueled by right-hander Owen Marsolek, who earned the win Saturday with 7 2/3 innings of two-run ball, allowing no hits and striking out 12. Marsolek has been dominant in three of his last four starts, posting 27 strikeouts over 22 innings in those outings. His lone rough stretch came May 2 against Oral Roberts, when he allowed 10 earned runs in four innings.

For South Dakota State, right-hander Matthew Werk has been a steady presence out of the bullpen. He pitched three scoreless innings Saturday, allowing one hit with two strikeouts, and threw a scoreless inning in Friday’s series-opening win. Werk has allowed only two earned runs over his last 8 1/3 innings.

The Jackrabbits won three of the first four meetings this season, taking two games in Saint Paul on April 10-11 by scores of 7-2 and 13-2.

Shortstop Adam Puder drove in two runs for the Tommies in Saturday’s win, going 1-for-3. South Dakota State’s offense, which has scored double-digit runs only once in its last six games, will look to bounce back against a Saint Thomas pitching staff that held the Jackrabbits to two runs Saturday.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-2 win for South Dakota State.

Following Sunday’s game, the Tommies return home for a three-game series against North Dakota State starting May 14. The Jackrabbits travel to Omaha for a four-game set beginning May 13.
