Jacksonville at Stetson

DELAND, Fla. (Interstat) — Jacksonville and Stetson conclude their ASUN series with a doubleheader Sunday afternoon and evening at Melching Field. The Dolphins (27-21) have taken two of three from the Hatters (19-30) entering the final day of the regular-season set.

Jacksonville is coming off a 5-4 victory Saturday in the series opener. Right-hander Alex Walsh tossed five shutout innings, striking out six while allowing one unearned run. The junior gets the ball again in Sunday’s first game. In his last four outings, Walsh has a 3-1 record with 20 strikeouts and a 2.89 ERA over 18 2/3 innings. His only loss came May 1 against North Florida, when he allowed three earned runs in 3 2/3 innings.

Second baseman Roger Vergara drove in two runs Saturday, including a home run, and went 2-for-4. Reliever Austin Williamson earned the save with two perfect innings.

Stetson counters with right-hander James Hays in the opener. Hays took the loss Saturday despite a quality start: 5 1/3 innings, seven hits, three earned runs, two strikeouts. The sophomore has been inconsistent this season. He struck out 11 over 6 2/3 shutout innings in an April 17 loss to North Florida, but allowed seven earned runs in 5 1/3 innings against West Georgia on April 24.

Left fielder Andrew Ezell drove in the Hatters’ only run Saturday with an RBI single. Reliever TJ Melani threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

The all-time series favors Jacksonville, which has won four of the last five meetings. The Dolphins swept a three-game series at home April 2-4, winning 5-1, 4-3 and 3-0.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-5 Jacksonville victory in the opener.

Sunday’s doubleheader is the first time the teams have played two games on the same day this season. The weather forecast calls for conditions in the low 80s with potential for isolated thunderstorms.

Jacksonville closes the regular season next week with a three-game home series against Florida Gulf Coast beginning Thursday. Stetson travels to Queens (N.C.) for a three-game set starting the same day.

For Jacksonville, the Dolphins have won five of their last seven games. Stetson has dropped four of its last five.

The second game of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin approximately 45 minutes after the first game ends. Both games count toward ASUN standings.
