UC Irvine at UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Interstat) — UC Irvine and UC Riverside close a three-game Big West series Sunday, May 10, at Riverside Sports Complex, with first pitch scheduled for the afternoon — or possibly the evening. The start time was listed both as afternoon and evening.

Weather for the game is forecast as clear, 71 degrees.

The Anteaters (23-23) have won the first two games of the series by a combined 32-8, including a 15-3 victory Saturday and a 17-5 win Friday. UC Riverside (14-31) has lost four straight overall and eight of its last nine.

UC Irvine second baseman Auggie Gutierrez enters on a high note after going 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBIs in Saturday’s game. However, prior to that performance, Gutierrez had been in a prolonged slump: over his previous eight games, he managed just two hits in 28 at-bats, his only other extra-base hit a double April 24 at UC San Diego.

UC Riverside right-hander Ryan Higgins is expected to work out of the bullpen. In Saturday’s loss, Higgins threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing three hits. Over his last four outings, he has allowed one earned run in 6 1/3 innings, though he has surrendered 10 hits in that span.

The Highlanders have been outscored 54-24 during their four-game skid. Their last win came April 19 at Long Beach State.

The Interstat game simulator projects a 5-4 UC Irvine victory.

UC Irvine hosts Cal State Bakersfield for a three-game series beginning Thursday. UC Riverside travels to UC Santa Barbara for a three-game set starting the same day.
