Saturday, May 9, 2026 · Final · HL First Round Game 2 (YSU leads 2-0)

Milwaukee at Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN (Interstat) — Ryan Schummer’s three-run home run in the third inning capped a four-run outburst that lifted Youngstown State to a 4-3 victory over Milwaukee on Saturday afternoon.

Schummer finished 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs for the Penguins, who improved to 12-37 overall and snapped a two-game losing streak. The Panthers fell to 18-31.

Youngstown State starter Jack Messmore earned the win after allowing three earned runs on six hits over seven innings, striking out seven. Bryce Palms pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, and Tyler Heflin retired the final two batters for his first save.

Milwaukee’s Aric Ehmke turned in a dominant performance despite taking a no-decision. He fired seven innings of no-hit ball, striking out eight and allowing no earned runs, but three unearned runs in the third inning proved costly. Cullen Riel threw a perfect eighth with three strikeouts.

The game’s decisive moment came in the bottom of the third inning. After a leadoff single by James Carlson, Nic Goodwin reached on a throwing error by second baseman Tate Schmidt, putting runners at first and second. VI Smith singled to load the bases, and Carlson was thrown out at home trying to score on the play. Nathan Beckley then doubled down the left-field line, driving in Smith and allowing Goodwin to score, giving the Penguins a 2-0 lead. Schummer followed with a towering home run to right field, scoring Beckley and Smith to make it 4-0. All four runs were unearned.

Milwaukee began its comeback in the fifth inning. Dominic Kibler led off with a solo home run to right field, and Schmidt followed with another solo shot to the same area, cutting the deficit to 4-2.

The Panthers inched closer in the seventh. Dylan O’Connell led off with a single, stole second, and advanced to third on a flyout. Bradyn Horn then lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, plating O’Connell to make it 4-3.

Milwaukee threatened in the eighth. Ross Grant doubled with two outs and Charlie Marion walked, but O’Connell grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the inning.

The Panthers put the tying run on base in the ninth. Horn walked and John Hadley singled, but Heflin struck out Connor Bozak and Joey Spence to seal the victory.

Kibler went 1-for-4 with a homer and an RBI for Milwaukee, while Schmidt was 2-for-3 with a homer and an RBI. Grant finished 1-for-4 with a double. Horn added a hit and an RBI.

For Youngstown State, Beckley doubled and drove in a run. Carlson and Smith each had a hit.

The Panthers outhit the Penguins 8-9 but committed three errors that led to all four Youngstown State runs being unearned. Ehmke’s no-hit bid was the first time a Milwaukee pitcher had held an opponent without a hit through seven innings this season.

Interstat’s game simulator projected a 5-3 victory for Milwaukee, and Interstat’s ELO system gave the Panthers a 63.50 percent probability to win. The two teams close the series Sunday afternoon.
