LSU at Georgia
ATHENS, Ga. (Interstat) — Michael O’Shaughnessy homered twice and drove in five runs to power Georgia to a 13-8 victory over LSU on Saturday at Athens Olympic Indoor Hall, extending the Bulldogs’ winning streak and handing the Tigers their second straight loss in the Southeastern Conference series.
O’Shaughnessy, a third baseman, went 2 for 5 with a grand slam in the second inning and a solo home run in the eighth. His first blast highlighted an eight-run second inning that gave Georgia a lead it never relinquished. He also walked and scored twice. The Bulldogs improved to 40-11 overall, while LSU dropped to 29-23.
Georgia struck first in the bottom of the second after Hudson walked and Branch singled. Phelps drove in Hudson with a single, and Jack walked to load the bases. O’Shaughnessy then launched a 4-0 pitch over the center-field fence, scoring all three runners and putting Georgia ahead 5-0. The Bulldogs kept pouring it on. Lujo singled and stole second, Ishikawa singled him home, and Jordy Oriach followed with a two-run homer to right field, extending the lead to 8-0.
LSU answered in the top of the third. Reaves walked, stole second, and Serna Jr. was hit by a pitch. Curiel walked to load the bases, and Cade Arrambide cleared them with a three-run double to left field, cutting the deficit to 8-3. But Georgia’s pitching staff, led by Paul Farley, stabilized the game. Farley worked 3 2/3 innings of relief, allowing three hits and no earned runs while striking out three. He did not factor into the decision.
The Bulldogs added a run in the fifth on Jack’s RBI double, then Oriach singled home another run to make it 10-3. Georgia stretched the lead to 12-3 in the sixth on a run-scoring groundout by Phelps and an RBI single from Jack.
LSU mounted a comeback in the top of the eighth. Arrambide walked, Milam walked, and Pearson singled to load the bases. Ruckert grounded out to drive in Arrambide, and Chris Stanfield, pinch-hitting and later taking over in left field, crushed a three-run homer to left, pulling the Tigers to 12-7. O’Shaughnessy answered immediately in the bottom half, leading off with his second homer of the game, a solo shot to left-center that restored Georgia’s six-run lead.
LSU scored once more in the ninth. Curiel doubled, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch, but the rally fell short.
Georgia’s offense collected 14 hits, led by O’Shaughnessy and Kolby Branch, who went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two runs scored. Daniel Jackson added two hits and two RBIs. LSU managed only seven hits and grounded into three double plays, hampering its ability to sustain rallies.
Stanfield provided the biggest jolt for LSU with his three-run homer, his only hit in one at-bat. Arrambide drove in three runs despite going 1 for 4. On the mound, Zion Theophilus tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the Tigers, striking out one.
Georgia’s victory built on a 11-8 win over LSU on Friday and set up a series finale Sunday. LSU’s struggles continued a pattern of close losses, having dropped three of its last four Southeastern Conference games by a combined five runs.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Georgia 7, LSU 6. The ELO system gave Georgia a 52.40 percent probability to win. Georgia entered as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 2.5.
