Mustangs Fall to Titans in 4‑3 Big West Thriller
FULLERTON, Calif. (Interstat) — Cal State Fullerton edged Cal Poly 4-3 on Friday night at Goodwin Field, using a four-hit performance from Paul Contreras to snap a five-game losing streak. The Titans improved to 21-25 overall and 9-11 in the Big West, while the Mustangs dropped to 27-21 and 12-5.
Contreras went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and scored once, leading a nine-hit Fullerton attack. Andrew Wright earned the win in relief, striking out five over 2 1/3 scoreless innings. Starter Mikiah Negrete allowed three runs on six hits with five strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. Brady Estes pitched two hitless frames for Cal Poly with three strikeouts.
The Mustangs mustered seven hits, including three from first baseman Gavin Spiridonoff and a solo homer from designated hitter Cam Hoiland. Starter Griffin Naess struck out four over six innings but allowed three earned runs on no hits — a quirk reflecting walks and errors — and took the loss. Jake Downing drove in a run for Cal Poly.
Fullerton struck early and held on, with Nick Miller adding three hits and Cameron Kim contributing a sacrifice fly. The teams continue their three-game series Saturday.
