Cal Poly at Cal State Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. (Interstat) — Paul Contreras went 4 for 4 with two RBIs and Andrew Wright struck out five over 2 1/3 innings of one-hit relief as Cal State Fullerton edged Cal Poly 4-3 on Friday night at Goodwin Field.

The Titans jumped ahead in the bottom of the second inning with a three-run outburst that erased a 3-1 deficit and held off a late Mustangs push.

Cal Poly struck first with a two-run top of the first. Broc Castellon singled to right field to open the game and later scored on a fielding error by the Titans first baseman. However, the Mustangs loaded the bases with no outs only to have a groundout double play and a flyout limit the damage to two runs.

The Mustangs added another run in the second. Gavin Spiridonoff doubled down the left-field line to drive in Ryan McLaurin, and Jake Downing singled up the middle to bring home Spiridonoff, making it 3-0.

Cal State Fullerton answered in the bottom half. Nick Miller singled, and Contreras doubled to put runners at second and third. Cameron Kim grounded out to third base, scoring Miller. After a flyout, Edward Olazaba singled up the middle to drive in Contreras, cutting the lead to 3-2.

The Titans took the lead for good in the bottom of the second. With one out, Nico Lombardi reached on a throwing error by Cal Poly second baseman Jake Downing. Charlie Burdick singled on a bunt, and Miller singled to load the bases. Contreras then lined a single down the right-field line, driving in Burdick and Lombardi – the latter unearned – to put the Titans ahead 4-3.

Cal Poly starter Griffin Naess worked six innings, allowing three earned runs with four strikeouts. Despite not surrendering a hit, according to the official line, Naess was charged with three earned runs, thanks to an error and two walks that contributed to the Titans’ rally. Brady Estes tossed two scoreless innings of relief, striking out three.

The Mustangs threatened in the seventh. Cam Hoiland led off with a solo home run to right field, his first of the season, cutting the margin to 4-4. Spiridonoff followed with a double, and Downing walked, but Wright entered from the bullpen and retired three straight Mustangs to preserve the tie.

Wright, who replaced starter Mikiah Negrete after 6 2/3 innings, allowed only one hit and struck out five, including a critical strikeout of Hoiland in the ninth with a runner on second. Negrete gave up three earned runs on six hits over 6 2/3 innings.

Contreras’ night included a triple in the fifth, extending his recent hot streak. Over his previous four games, he had five hits in 16 at-bats with a home run and four RBIs.

Spiridonoff finished 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI for Cal Poly, which stranded 10 runners. Miller added three hits for the Titans.

With the win, Cal State Fullerton improved to 21-25 overall and ended a four-game losing streak. Cal Poly fell to 27-21.

The series continues Saturday with the same two teams.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Cal Poly 6, Cal State Fullerton 2, and the Interstat ELO system gave the Mustangs a 59.40 percent probability of winning.
