Indiana at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Interstat) — Purdue scored seven runs in the eighth inning, erasing a nine-run deficit to stun Indiana 11-9 on Friday at Alexander Field in a Big Ten matchup.

The Boilermakers trailed 9-0 after the top of the fourth inning but rallied behind a two-run fourth, a two-run seventh and the explosive eighth to improve to 32-15. The Hoosiers fell to 21-28.

Indiana starter Tony Neubeck pitched six no-hit innings, striking out eight and allowing only two earned runs before leaving with a 9-2 lead. Neubeck’s performance kept Purdue off the scoreboard entirely through the first three innings. The Hoosiers built their lead in the top of the first and fourth.

In the first, Indiana took advantage of a fielding error by Purdue third baseman Sam Flores to put runners on. After a walk and a sacrifice bunt, Owen ten Oever doubled to center field to drive in two unearned runs. The Hoosiers added seven more in the fourth. Brayden Ricketts pinch-hit and hit a three-run homer to left field, scoring three. Caleb Koskie followed with a two-run single to right, and a double by Hanley and a single by Koskie capped the inning, making it 9-0.

Purdue scratched back in the fourth. Singles from Bessette and Moore and a walk to Boyle loaded the bases, and Zachary Zychowski singled up the middle to drive in two runs, cutting it to 9-2. Neither team scored again until the seventh, when Purdue’s Boyle was hit by a pitch, Zychowski tripled to center field to score him, and Anderson’s sacrifice fly plated Zychowski, making it 9-4.

The pivotal eighth inning began with walks to Moore and a double by Manias that put runners at second and third. After a lineout, Richmond doubled down the left-field line to score both, trimming the deficit to 9-6. Boyle singled, and Zychowski reached on a fielder’s choice. Anderson grounded out to first base, bringing in Richmond to make it 9-7. Brandon Rogers, pinch-hitting for Malbrough, singled to left to drive in Zychowski and Boyle, tying the game 9-9. Flores then homered down the right-field line, scoring Rogers and himself to give Purdue an 11-9 lead. Indiana brought in pitcher Anthony Gubitosi, who struck out Manias to end the inning.

Indiana attempted a comeback in the ninth but went down in order against Purdue reliever Jake Kramer, who pitched a scoreless inning with one strikeout. Purdue starter Graham Kollen threw 2⅔ innings of relief, allowing three hits and no earned runs, striking out three, and earned the win. Zychowski finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Flores went 1-for-5 with the two-run homer and two RBIs. Rogers drove in two on his single. For Indiana, Ricketts was 1-for-1 with the three-run homer, Koskie was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, and ten Oever had two RBIs. Indiana made two sacrifice hits, both by Koskie and Gates.

The game featured 11 hits by each team. Indiana’s Neubeck dominated early but did not factor in the decision. Purdue’s bullpen held Indiana to no runs over the final three innings after Kollen entered in the sixth.
