Manhattan at NJIT

NEWARK (Interstat) — Ryan Lordier went 3 for 5 with two RBIs and Trevor Hansen hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning as the Manhattan Jaspers defeated the NJIT Highlanders 7-2 on Tuesday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

Lordier, the Jaspers’ shortstop, tripled in a run in the fifth inning and doubled in another run in the seventh. He also doubled in the third inning but was stranded. The performance came after Lordier went 0 for 4 in a 1-0 loss at Dartmouth on Sunday and 4 for 5 with three RBIs in an 11-3 win at Dartmouth on Saturday.

Hansen’s eighth-inning blast capped a three-run inning that put the game out of reach. The first baseman finished 1 for 3 with a walk and two RBIs.

Manhattan starting pitcher Andrew Brown tossed 3 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out three. Manhattan added a run in the fifth. Jackson Brinker singled and Lordier tripled to right field, driving in Brinker to make it 2-0.

NJIT got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Levin led off with a home run to left field, cutting the lead to 2-1.

The Jaspers extended their lead in the seventh. Colin Basehore walked and scored on Lordier’s double. Lordier later scored on a single by Guriyandel Salva, giving Manhattan a 4-1 advantage.

The Highlanders answered in the bottom of the seventh. Levin walked, Dillon Can walked and Ty Sallie walked to load the bases. Austin Francis walked, forcing in Levin and making it 4-2. But Kuntzelman relieved Epps and got Lorenzo Camilleri to foul out to third, ending the threat.

Manhattan blew the game open in the eighth. Best singled and was replaced by pinch runner Payton Matthews. Sute singled, putting runners at first and third. Mihalinac relieved Catalano. Hansen then homered to center field, scoring Matthews, Sute and himself for a 7-2 lead.

NJIT threatened in the ninth. Levin singled with one out and advanced to second on a groundout. Sallie walked, but Francis lined out to first base to end the game.

Manhattan’s offense collected 10 hits. Best went 2 for 4. NJIT managed five hits, with Levin going 2 for 3 with a home run, a walk and an RBI.
