Manhattan at NJIT

NEWARK, N.J. (Interstat) — The Manhattan Jaspers and NJIT Highlanders meet in a non-conference afternoon-evening doubleheader Tuesday at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

Manhattan (16-25) and NJIT (15-26-1) enter the twin bill looking to build momentum after splitting their weekend series. The weather forecast calls for 72-degree temperatures and clouds.

The Jaspers dropped Sunday’s series finale at Dartmouth 1-0, managing just one hit. Right-hander Joseph Duffield was the bright spot, tossing six shutout innings with four strikeouts while allowing no hits and one unearned run. Duffield has been Manhattan’s most consistent arm, posting a 0.82 ERA over his last three appearances (14.2 IP, 2 ER, 9 K) despite taking losses in each outing. He figures to start one game Tuesday.

NJIT won its Sunday home finale against Bryant 5-3 behind a dominant performance from right-hander Brandon Peterson. The sophomore worked six innings, allowing four hits and no earned runs with six strikeouts. Center fielder Ty Sallie drove in three runs on a home run. Peterson has been electric over his last two starts (12 IP, 0 ER, 8 K). The Highlanders have lost three of five but posted a 16-inning tie with Fairleigh Dickinson on April 29.

Manhattan has dropped four of its last five but showed offensive life in an 11-3 win at Dartmouth on May 2. The Jaspers have struggled on the road, going 4-12 away from home.

NJIT has won two of its last three after a four-game skid. The Highlanders are 8-12 at home.

The Interstat game simulator projects a 4-3 final in favor of Manhattan.

The Jaspers open a weekend home series against Niagara on Friday. NJIT travels to Boston College for a doubleheader Saturday.
