Arizona State at UCF

ORLANDO, Fla. (Interstat) — Zak Skinner’s tiebreaking home run in the fifth inning and a two-run rally in the seventh lifted UCF to a 4-2 victory over Arizona State on Saturday at Jay Bergman Field in a Big 12 baseball game that was suspended by lightning and resumed Sunday.

The Knights improved to 27-16 overall, while the Sun Devils dropped to 32-15. UCF outhit Arizona State 12-9.

The game was halted with one out in the bottom of the second inning due to lightning in the area at 1:44 p.m. and officially suspended, resuming Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. When play resumed, the score remained 2-1 in favor of Arizona State.

Roman Kimball was the top star for UCF, working 4 1/3 innings of relief, allowing three hits, one earned run and striking out three. He entered in the third inning after Kris Sosnowski faced two batters, and Kimball held the Sun Devils scoreless until the eighth.

Arizona State took an early lead in the top of the first. With runners on base, a throwing error by UCF shortstop Andrew Lodise allowed a run to score, and a groundout later brought in another run, giving the Sun Devils a 2-0 advantage.

UCF answered in the bottom of the first. Braden Williamson led off with a double down the right-field line and advanced to third on a passed ball. Skinner singled up the middle to drive him in, cutting the deficit to 2-1. The Knights loaded the bases on a single and a walk, but starter Jaden Alba struck out two batters to escape further damage.

Alba pitched two innings, allowing one earned run on three hits with three strikeouts. He was replaced by Kole Klecker after the weather delay. Klecker threw two perfect innings, striking out four.

In the top of the second, Arizona State extended its lead without a hit. Brandon Smaldino walked, advanced on a single by Kyle Michel, and scored on a single by Matt Zavorek that was compounded by a throwing error by UCF third baseman Andrew Crespo, making it 2-1.

The game remained 2-1 until the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Skinner launched his fifth home run of the season down the left-field line off Arizona State reliever Alex Overbay, tying the game 2-2. UCF loaded the bases on a single and a walk, but Alex Overbay struck out Will Rogers to end the threat.

Arizona State threatened in the top of the sixth. Alex Roellig singled, stole second, but was caught stealing third on a pickoff by Kimball. The Sun Devils did not score.

The decisive inning came in the bottom of the seventh. With the score still tied, Arizona State brought in reliever Finn Edwards. Crespo singled and Anthony Moran singled, putting runners at first and second. Rogers singled to left field, scoring Crespo and giving UCF a 3-2 lead. Moran advanced to third on the hit, and both runners moved up on a passed ball. Andrew Ross then hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Moran for a 4-2 lead.

Arizona State made a final push in the top of the eighth. Nolan Hairston singled, and after Kimball was replaced by Evan Jones, Kade Contrades and Caden Toigo each singled to load the bases with no outs. Roellig hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Hairston and cutting the UCF lead to 4-3. But Jones induced a double play from Smaldino to end the inning, stranding two runners.

The Sun Devils put two runners on in the ninth against Jones, but Hairston flied out and Contrades popped out to shortstop to end the game.

Josh Butler pitched a scoreless eighth for Arizona State, allowing one hit. Camden Wicker worked two scoreless innings for UCF with four strikeouts before the weather delay. Evan Jones earned the save with two innings of work, allowing four hits and no runs.

Kimball’s recent outings included a win over Stetson on April 29 and a win at Bethune-Cookman on April 21.

Arizona State had won the series opener 9-4 on Friday, but the Knights evened the series with Saturday’s victory. The teams were scheduled to play the rubber match Sunday.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Arizona State 8, UCF 6, and Interstat’s ELO system gave the Sun Devils a 51 percent probability to win.
