Manhattan at Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. (Interstat) — Dartmouth scored eight runs in the second inning and never looked back, crushing Manhattan 13-2 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday at Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park.

The Big Green sent 13 batters to the plate in the decisive second frame, erasing an early 2-0 deficit and seizing a 9-2 lead. Manhattan had taken the lead in the top of the first on a walk and a pair of strikeouts sandwiched around a stolen base, but the Jaspers managed only two hits all game.

Manhattan’s Trev Hansen tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the second with a solo home run to right field, his first of the season. But the Jaspers’ momentum vanished in the bottom half of the inning. Dartmouth’s Tyler Sirchia delivered the key blow, a two-run single through the right side that scored Sam Andersen and Nico Banez to knot the game. After a fielder’s choice ended the first out, Dartmouth strung together five consecutive hits and a sacrifice fly.

Alejandro Puig walked and later scored on a hit-by-pitch to Sam Andersen, who drove in Taer Rodriguez. Milo Suarez singled through the left side to plate Puig. Sirchia then singled again, this time driving in two more runs and advancing to second on the throw. Jack Espiritu Niswonger singled to right field, scoring Suarez, and Connor Miller flied out to left field for a sacrifice fly that scored Sirchia. Later in the inning, with two outs, Rodriguez singled to left field to drive in Niswonger, and a walk to Murray H. kept the inning alive before Puig flied out to center field to end the outburst.

Dartmouth starter Marco Dumsky earned the win, allowing two hits and two earned runs over five innings while striking out six. He walked three. Dumsky threw 85 pitches, 53 for strikes, and retired the side in order in the first and third innings. He allowed a fourth-inning RBI single to Manhattan’s Co Basehore that cut the lead to 9-3, but the Jaspers could not mount a further rally.

Manhattan starter Hu Pergamit was pulled after 1 1/3 innings, having allowed eight runs on six hits and three walks. Braedon Romero provided a bright spot for the Jaspers, pitching 3 1/3 hitless innings of relief with one strikeout. Steven Bronson added a scoreless sixth inning for Manhattan, striking out one.

Dartmouth added four unearned runs in the sixth inning, capitalizing on a throwing error by Manhattan’s third baseman. With one out, Suarez reached on the error, advanced to second on a single by Niswonger, then stole third. After a strikeout and a walk loaded the bases, Rodriguez walked to force in Suarez. Puig then doubled to left field, clearing the bases and extending the lead to 13-2.

Sirchia finished 2 for 4 with four runs batted in. Puig went 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Rodriguez went 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Niswonger added two hits and an RBI. Andersen tripled and drove in a run. Suarez had a hit, an RBI and scored twice. For Manhattan, Hansen had the lone home run, and Basehore had the only other hit, a single.

Manhattan fell to 15-24 overall. Dartmouth improved to 13-22. The Jaspers had lost five of their previous six games entering Saturday, while the Big Green had won two of their previous three.

The game was the first of a scheduled doubleheader. The teams were set to play again later Saturday. Manhattan’s next 10 games include a road contest at NJIT on Tuesday and a home series against Niagara beginning Friday. Dartmouth’s next games are the second game of the doubleheader Saturday and a road series at Yale on May 9-10.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Dartmouth 5, Manhattan 4. Interstat’s ELO system gave Dartmouth a 53.60 percent probability to win the contest.
