Hawaii at Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Ore. (Interstat) — Eric Segura tossed six innings of five-hit ball and Nyan Hayes delivered a tiebreaking two-run homer in the seventh as Oregon State beat Hawaii 3-1 on Sunday evening at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.

The Beavers improved to 33-9 overall, while the Warriors dropped to 15-16. Oregon State completed a three-game sweep of Hawaii, following 8-1 and 12-4 wins in the previous two days.

Hawaii struck first in the top of the second. With one out, Christian Hoffman doubled down the right-field line, scoring Redding from second base to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. The rally began when Redding singled to shallow right and advanced on a wild pitch. But the inning ended when Takata was picked off second base.

Oregon State managed just three hits in the game, but made them count at key moments. Hawaii starter Brody Martin-Grudzielanek was brilliant through six innings, allowing no hits and one earned run while striking out four. He exited after 6⅓ innings with the score still 1-0 in his favor. Martin-Grudzielanek faced only one batter in the seventh, hitting Paul Vazquez with a pitch before giving way to reliever Tsubasa Tomii.

Tomii inherited a runner on first with one out. Hayes, Oregon State’s center fielder, then launched his first home run of the season to left field, scoring Vazquez and putting the Beavers ahead 2-1. The homer was the first hit of the game for Oregon State and their only extra-base hit until the eighth.

Oregon State added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Glassco walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Tomii. Inge doubled to left center, driving in Glassco to make it 3-1.

Segura (6 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 3 K) was the winning pitcher in a well-pitched duel. He worked around five Hawaii hits and a second-inning run, striking out three. Isaac Yeager pitched two scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit while striking out three. Albert Roblez closed the ninth with a perfect inning, striking out one.

The Hawaii offense could not capitalize on its opportunities. The Warriors grounded into two double plays and had a runner erased on a pickoff in the second. Hoffman went 2 for 3 with an RBI to lead Hawaii, but the Warriors left only two runners on base overall.

Martin-Grudzielanek’s no-hit bid ended when he exited after the seventh. He threw 6⅓ innings of no-hit ball, allowing only the hit batter and one earned run with four strikeouts. Tomii took the loss, giving up two earned runs in 1⅔ innings.

The game featured three defensive changes and a hit-by-pitch that was upheld after a Hawaii challenge in the fourth. In the eighth, a Hawaii challenge overturned a call on a Hoffman single, but the Warriors later grounded into a double play.

Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of Oregon State 7, Hawaii 3. Interstat’s ELO system gave Oregon State a 76.90 percent probability to win the game.
