Hawaii at Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Ore. (Interstat) — Oregon State looks to complete a three-game sweep of Hawaii when the teams meet Sunday evening at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. under clear skies and 66-degree temperatures.

The Beavers (32-9) have dominated the series opener and second game, winning 12-4 on Friday and 8-1 on Saturday. Coach Mitch Canham’s club owns the best record in the Pac-12 and has won nine of its last 11 contests following a midweek loss to Oregon.

Hawaii (15-15) dropped to .500 with Saturday’s loss. The Warriors have struggled against quality competition, going 3-7 in their last 10 games. They have not won a road game since April 3 at UC San Diego.

Right-hander Dax Whitney (7-2, 2.41 ERA) is expected to start for Oregon State. In Friday’s win over Hawaii, Whitney allowed five hits and three earned runs over 6 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts. He also threw a complete-game shutout at Lamar on April 3, striking out 10. Whitney has been Oregon State’s most consistent arm, holding opponents to a .199 batting average.

Hawaii will counter with left-hander Ryan Inouye (3-3, 5.40 ERA). Inouye struggled Friday against the Beavers, allowing one earned run on no hits in 3 1/3 innings, but walked four and was charged with the loss. He has been effective in short stints but has not completed five innings since March 22. Inouye has 35 strikeouts in 35 innings this season.

Oregon State’s offense has been the catalyst, averaging 7.2 runs per game. The Beavers have outscored Hawaii 20-5 through two games. Catcher Wilson Weber and outfielder Gavin Turley lead the team with 12 home runs apiece.

Hawaii will need to generate more offense after managing just one run Saturday. Third baseman Stone Miyao is batting .348 and has reached base safely in 12 straight games.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-3 Oregon State victory.

The Beavers will host Texas-Rio Grande Valley on Tuesday and Wednesday before a weekend series with Cal State Northridge. Hawaii returns home to face UC Riverside on May 2.
