UNC Wilmington at Elon

ELON, N.C. (Interstat) — Connor Marshburn pitched seven no-hit innings and UNC Wilmington completed a three-game series sweep of Elon with an 8-1 victory Sunday at Walter C. Latham Park.

Marshburn, a right-hander, struck out eight and did not allow a baserunner through his outing. He retired the first 21 batters he faced before being lifted after the seventh inning. His performance was a sharp rebound from his previous start April 17 against Hofstra, when he allowed five earned runs on 10 hits in 4⅔ innings.

The Seahawks improved to 24-17 overall and 12-8 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Phoenix fell to 17-26 and 6-14.

UNC Wilmington jumped on Elon starter Owen Winebarger in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Jac Caglianone — listed in the game account as Pennella — singled to center field. Trevor Lucas followed by launching his seventh home run of the season to deep center field, scoring Pennella and giving the Seahawks a quick 2-0 lead. Hughes singled, and after a flyout and a pickoff, the Seahawks added another baserunner on a throwing error by Elon third baseman Hindle, but the inning ended with a groundout.

The Seahawks extended their lead in the second. Jake Bechtel walked and Aiden Evans hit his first home run of the season to center field, scoring Bechtel for a 4-0 advantage. Lucas then doubled but was stranded.

UNC Wilmington added another run in the third. Newton singled, advanced on a flyout, and scored on Bechtel’s double to right field, making it 5-0. The Seahawks struck again in the seventh, chasing Winebarger after 6⅓ innings. Winebarger allowed five earned runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts.

Elon reliever Kehler Hamilton faced one batter, issuing a walk to Newton, and was replaced by Michael Staiano. Tyrrell singled, sending Newton to third, and Bechtel doubled to left field, driving in Newton. Martinez grounded out to third, scoring Tyrrell and moving Bechtel to third. Evans then doubled to left center, scoring Bechtel for the eighth run.

Elon scored its only run in the ninth inning. With one out, pinch-hitter Evans — not to be confused with UNC Wilmington’s Aiden Evans — singled up the middle. He advanced to second on defensive indifference, and Fattore singled to left field to drive him in, cutting the deficit to 8-1. That was the only hit allowed by UNC Wilmington reliever Clay Masonis, who pitched the ninth inning and gave up one earned run.

Elon managed only four hits in the game. The Phoenix had no baserunners through seven innings against Marshburn. Francesco Capocci pitched a scoreless eighth inning with one strikeout for the Seahawks.

UNC Wilmington’s offense collected 15 hits. Lucas went 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and two RBIs. Bechtel finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Evans was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Pennella had two hits.

Elon starter Winebarger took the loss. Relievers Staiano, Hamilton and RJ Latkowski combined for 2⅓ innings, allowing three runs on four hits.

The series sweep extended UNC Wilmington’s dominance over Elon this season. The Seahawks have won all five meetings, including a 5-1 win Saturday and a 9-8 victory Friday. UNC Wilmington also swept a three-game series at home against Elon in March, outscoring the Phoenix 27-7 over the weekend.

The Seahawks next host College of Charleston for a three-game series beginning May 1. Elon travels to William & Mary for a three-game set starting the same day.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of UNC Wilmington 4, Elon 3. Its ELO system gave the Seahawks a 69.2 percent probability to win.
