Cornell at Brown
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Interstat) — Cornell scored five unanswered runs after the third inning and reliever Michael Tight tossed four shutout innings to lead the Big Red to an 8-3 victory over Brown on Sunday afternoon at Murray Stadium.
The Big Red, who entered the game with a 10-24 record, snapped a two-game losing streak against the Bears, who fell to 19-16. Cornell had lost 16-4 to Brown in the first game of a doubleheader the previous day before winning 2-1 in 13 innings.
Cornell struck first in the top of the third inning. Mason Barela singled to right-center, and Kyle Wildman singled down the right-field line, advancing to second on an error. After a walk to Jack Carlson, Jake Hower singled to center field, driving in both Barela and Wildman. Tyler Swidorski followed with a single through the left side, scoring Carlson to give Cornell a 3-0 lead.
Brown answered in the bottom of the third. Jack Edmunds singled, and Matt Luigs doubled down the left-field line. Center fielder Mika Petersen then homered down the right-field line, a three-run shot that tied the game at 3-3. It was the only hit allowed by Cornell starter Ethan Hamill, who went 5 innings with 3 earned runs and 3 strikeouts.
The game remained tied until the top of the fifth, when Cornell regained the lead without a hit. Wildman reached on a throwing error by shortstop Matt Luigs, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and moved to third on another wild pitch during Carlson’s walk. Luke Johnson singled to left field, driving in Wildman for an unearned run and a 4-3 advantage.
Cornell’s bullpen then took control. Tight entered in the bottom of the sixth and retired 10 of the 13 batters he faced, striking out three without allowing a hit. He lowered his ERA to 1.80 over his last three appearances, which included a win April 21 at Binghamton and a no-decision against Yale.
The Big Red broke the game open in the eighth inning. Swidorski singled, and Brendan Beaulieu bunted for a single. Jayden Shin reached on a throwing error by third baseman Mark Henshon on a sacrifice bunt, allowing Swidorski to score. Chris Barclay grounded out to second, bringing in Beaulieu. Barela then singled to left, scoring Shin. Two wild pitches and a walk to pinch-hitter Cole Lopez moved the runners, but the inning ended with Cornell leading 7-3.
In the ninth, Hower singled and advanced on a passed ball, then scored on Shin’s single to center field for the final margin of 8-3.
Cornell finished with 14 hits and two sacrifice hits, though it grounded into two double plays. Brown managed 7 hits, all singles except Petersen’s homer and Luigs’ double. Petersen went 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Luigs also had two hits.
Dylan Reid started for Brown and took the loss, allowing 8 hits and 3 earned runs over 6 innings with 5 strikeouts. Relievers Bryan Yang and Brenden Kline combined for 3 innings, giving up 5 hits and 4 runs, 2 earned.
The win improved Cornell to 5-11 in Ivy League play, while Brown dropped to 9-6. The Bears are scheduled to face Columbia on Wednesday, followed by a three-game series at Penn next weekend. Cornell will host Bucknell on Tuesday then Columbia for a three-game set.
