Canisius at Manhattan

FISHKILL, N.Y. (Interstat) — Canisius and Manhattan meet Sunday afternoon at Dutchess Stadium in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matchup between two teams searching for consistency.

The Golden Griffins (12-21) and Jaspers (14-21) enter the series finale separated by two games in the win column. Manhattan took the series opener 2-0 on Friday, marking the fourth shutout loss of the season for Canisius.

First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., with the forecast calling for rain and temperatures near 46 degrees.

Canisius outfielder Eric Weeks has been the Griffins’ most volatile hitter. In his last nine games, the sophomore has produced three multi-hit performances, including a 3-for-6, two-homer, seven-RBI outburst Tuesday in a 24-11 win at Le Moyne. He also went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in a 10-3 win over Quinnipiac on April 17, but has been held hitless in four of those nine contests. Weeks is hitting .316 with six home runs and 24 RBIs this season.

Manhattan shortstop Jackson Babione provides a veteran presence in the leadoff spot. The senior went 1-for-1 with a home run and three RBIs in a 14-4 loss at La Salle on Tuesday, and had an RBI single in a 12-8 win at Fordham on April 7. Babione is batting .274 with four home runs and 22 RBIs.

The Jaspers split a four-game series at Rider last weekend, winning 6-4 before dropping the final two games. Manhattan is 6-7 at home this season.

Canisius has lost six of its last nine, with the lone wins coming in the Le Moyne laugher and an April 10 extra-inning victory at Niagara. The Griffins are 4-12 on the road.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-4 Manhattan victory.

After Sunday, Canisius heads to Iona for a three-game set beginning May 1. Manhattan travels to Navy on Wednesday before a two-game series at Dartmouth on May 2-3.
