Duke at Liberty
LYNCHBURG, Va. (Interstat) — The Liberty Flames, riding high as one of the nation’s top mid-major teams, will host the Duke Blue Devils in a nonconference rematch Tuesday at Liberty Baseball Stadium.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. under clear skies with temperatures around 60 degrees.
Liberty (28-11) enters with significant momentum, having won 10 of its last 12 games, including a series victory at Dallas Baptist. The Flames’ offense is potent, averaging over nine runs per game during that stretch. They shellacked Duke 17-7 just last week in Durham.
The Flames’ bullpen has been a key strength, featuring right-hander Tyler August. The reliever has been dominant lately, striking out 10 over five scoreless innings in his last two appearances, including three perfect frames with six strikeouts in Sunday’s win at Dallas Baptist.
Duke (22-20) seeks to halt a three-game skid after being swept at Boston College over the weekend. The Blue Devils’ pitching staff will look to contain a Liberty lineup that tagged them for 17 runs on 15 hits last Tuesday.
A player to watch for Duke is right-hander Peter Lemke. He has been a volatile but sometimes brilliant arm, tossing five no-hit innings against Boston College on April 18 before allowing two earned runs. However, in his prior outing against NC State on April 11, he recorded just two outs while surrendering six earned runs.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, Liberty is projected to win 7-4.
Following Tuesday’s contest, Liberty travels to face Virginia on Wednesday. Duke returns home to begin a crucial Atlantic Coast Conference series against North Carolina on Thursday.
