Oral Roberts at South Dakota State
BROOKINGS, S.D. (Interstat) — The Oral Roberts Golden Eagles used a seven-run third inning and a dominant performance from their bullpen to complete a road sweep of the South Dakota State Jackrabbits with a 10-2 victory in Summit League baseball action Sunday at Erv Huether Field.
The game, which began in the afternoon and concluded in the evening, saw the Golden Eagles (23-14, 8-4 Summit) overwhelm the Jackrabbits (11-24, 3-9) for the third consecutive day, outscoring them 36-8 in the series.
Oral Roberts seized control early, pushing a single run across in the second inning on an RBI groundout by Sam Fender that scored Connor Kelly. The floodgates opened in the third. Hudson Ellis doubled and scored on a groundout by Kenta Tanaka. Wailele Kane-Yates followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0. After a walk and a pitching change, the inning unraveled further for South Dakota State when third baseman Nolan Grawe was ejected following the mound visit.
Cooper Combs delivered the pivotal blow, a two-run single up the middle. Fender added another RBI single, and Ellis capped the outburst with a run-scoring single that also involved a South Dakota State fielding error, staking Oral Roberts to an 8-0 lead.
The most important sequence of the game occurred in the bottom of the fifth inning. After the Jackrabbits scratched out a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Dawson Wachter, they threatened again in the fifth. Cael Wroblewski singled and later scored on an RBI triple by Luke Jirschele, cutting the deficit to 8-2 and chasing Oral Roberts starter Jackson Farrell.
Farrell, named the top star for Oral Roberts, earned the win with 4 1/3 innings of work, allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out four. His ability to navigate the early innings and hand a large lead to the bullpen set the tone.
Golden Eagles reliever Jack Hill entered with a runner on third and one out. He promptly induced a popup and a strikeout to strand Jirschele, extinguishing South Dakota State’s last genuine threat. Hill, Luke Williams and Kash Ferris combined for 4 2/3 perfect innings of relief, striking out seven of the 14 batters they faced. From the fifth inning onward, the Jackrabbits managed only one baserunner, a single in the eighth.
Oral Roberts added insurance runs in the fifth on an error and in the seventh on an RBI double by Will Edmunson and a sacrifice fly by Kane-Yates. The Golden Eagles finished with 12 hits, with Ellis, Edmunson and Kane-Yates each collecting two hits and driving in a combined four runs.
South Dakota State starter Caden Rylance took the loss, charged with six earned runs in 2 1/3 innings. Reliever Tristan Augedahl provided four innings of solid work, allowing two earned runs, and Dylan Richardson pitched two scoreless frames to close for the Jackrabbits.
The victory extends Oral Roberts’ winning streak to three games as they prepare for a midweek road test at Oklahoma. South Dakota State, mired in a three-game skid, will look to regroup when it hosts Northern Colorado next weekend.
