Ohio State at Purdue
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Interstat) — The Purdue Boilermakers will look to complete a series sweep of the Ohio State Buckeyes when the Big Ten rivals conclude a three-game set Sunday evening at Alexander Field.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. EDT under cloudy skies with a temperature near 46 degrees.
Purdue (26-11) has taken the first two games of the series, winning 10-9 on Friday and 12-7 on Saturday. The 26th-ranked Boilermakers have won 10 of their last 12 games.
Ohio State (19-18) has dropped three straight and will try to avoid falling below .500 overall.
A key matchup could feature relievers who excelled in Saturday’s contest. Purdue’s Gavin Beuter earned the win with four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out three. The right-hander has a 2.45 ERA over his last seven appearances.
Ohio State’s Jake Michalak was effective in a long-relief role Saturday, tossing 4 2/3 innings with no hits and two earned runs while striking out four. His recent outings have been volatile, mixing dominant performances with struggles.
The Boilermakers’ offense was powered Saturday by catcher Jackson Bessette, who homered and drove in three runs, and designated hitter Aaron Manias, who went 3-for-5 with a home run. For the Buckeyes, designated hitter Mason Eckelman had three hits and two RBIs, while first baseman Dane Harvey added a two-run homer.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projected final score is Purdue 7, Ohio State 6.
Following the series, Purdue hosts Indiana State on Tuesday before a non-conference road series at Southern California. Ohio State returns home to face Akron on Tuesday before a Big Ten series at Rutgers next weekend.
