Ohio State at Purdue
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Interstat) — In a wild back-and-forth Big Ten Conference opener defined by explosive innings and clutch relief pitching, the Purdue Boilermakers outlasted the Ohio State Buckeyes 10-9 on Friday night at Alexander Field.
The game, which featured 26 combined hits and five home runs, saw Purdue overcome an early seven-run deficit before holding off a late Ohio State rally to secure the victory and improve its season record to 25-11. Ohio State fell to 19-17.
The most critical sequence of the game occurred in the bottom of the sixth inning, breaking a 9-9 tie that had stood since the top of the fifth. With two outs and reliever Jack Cecil on the mound for Ohio State, Purdue third baseman Sam Flores ignited the rally with a double to left center. First baseman Moore followed by singling up the middle, driving in Flores for what proved to be the decisive run.
That run made a winner of Purdue reliever Howard, who entered in the sixth, and placed the game in the hands of the Boilermakers’ bullpen. The combination of Trevor Kester-Johnson and Jake Kramer delivered 2 1/3 innings of scoreless, hitless relief to seal it. Kramer recorded the final four outs, stranding the potential tying run at third base in the ninth inning after Mason Eckelman’s leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt.
The contest began in stunning fashion, with Ohio State striking for nine runs in the top of the first inning, all unearned due to a fielding error by Purdue center fielder Eli Anderson. The Buckeyes sent 14 batters to the plate, collecting seven hits, including an RBI single from Henry Kaczmar. The early outburst defied the pregame projections from Interstat, which gave Purdue a 62.3% probability to win and simulated a 7-6 Boilermaker victory.
Purdue responded immediately and forcefully. The Boilermakers chipped away with a sacrifice fly from Flores in the first, then erupted for six runs in the second inning to slash the deficit to 9-7. Anderson cleared the bases with a three-run double, and Flores capped the inning with a two-run homer to right field. Purdue tied the game at 9-9 in the fourth on another RBI single from Flores, who finished 3 for 4 with a home run, a double and four RBIs, rebounding from an 0-for-5 performance in his previous game.
Ohio State answered Purdue’s six-run second with a four-run fifth to retake a brief lead. Noah Furcht launched a three-run homer down the left field line, and Dane Harvey followed with a solo shot to right center, his first of two homers on the night. Harvey went 2 for 5 with two home runs and three RBIs.
The Buckeyes pulled back within a run in the seventh after Purdue had gone ahead 10-9. Harvey blasted his second homer, a two-run shot to right field, and Miles Vanden later delivered a two-run single through the left side. But with the bases loaded and only one out, Purdue’s Howard induced a strikeout and was relieved by Kollen, who ended the threat.
Eckelman and Kaczmar each had four hits for Ohio State’s 14-hit attack. Anderson paced Purdue’s 12-hit effort, going 3 for 5 with three RBIs. Cecil provided two scoreless innings of relief for Ohio State with three strikeouts.
The teams continue the three-game series Saturday.
