Youngstown State at Central Michigan

Preview: Youngstown State Penguins at Central Michigan Chippewas

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (Interstat) — The Central Michigan Chippewas look to halt a recent skid when they host the struggling Youngstown State Penguins in a nonconference matchup Wednesday at Bill Theunissen Stadium.

First pitch is scheduled for the evening under cloudy skies with a temperature near 72 degrees.

Central Michigan (12-19) has lost three of its last four, including a 9-6 home loss to Milwaukee on Monday. The Chippewas’ offense showed life in a 21-13 win at Bowling Green last Sunday, but consistency has been elusive.

A player to watch for the Chippewas is catcher Spencer Verburg, who is coming off a productive series. He homered and drove in two runs in Monday’s loss and also went deep with two RBIs in Sunday’s rout at Bowling Green.

Youngstown State (5-29) arrives mired in a seven-game losing streak, having been outscored 73-19 during that stretch. The Penguins are coming off an 11-1 loss at Akron on Tuesday.

Reliever Kale Wemer has been a rare bright spot for Youngstown State. In Tuesday’s defeat, he delivered 4 2/3 hitless innings of relief, allowing one earned run and striking out four. Over his last seven appearances, Wemer has surrendered just five hits in 14 innings.

The Penguins’ last win came on April 3, a 5-3 victory over Milwaukee. Central Michigan last won on April 12.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projected final score is Central Michigan 3, Youngstown State 2.

Following this single-game set, Central Michigan opens a three-game home series against Ohio on Friday. Youngstown State begins a three-game series at Oakland on Friday.
