Brown at Dartmouth
HANOVER, N.H. (Interstat) — Logan Meusy homered and drove in three runs, and the Brown Bears weathered a late push from the Dartmouth Big Green to secure a 7-5 victory in Ivy League baseball action Sunday evening at Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park.
The win gave Brown (15-13, 3-3 Ivy) a series split after the teams split a doubleheader Saturday. Dartmouth fell to 6-19 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
The most critical sequence of the game came in the top of the fifth inning, with Brown leading 7-3. After Jack Butera was hit by a pitch, Meusy connected on a two-run homer to left field off Dartmouth reliever Kyle KlaricSchell. The blast provided crucial insurance runs and proved to be the final scoring play for the Bears, whose offense was otherwise held in check over the final four innings by the Dartmouth bullpen.
Meusy, Brown’s top star, finished the day 3 for 5. His recent surge continued after a quiet start to the weekend series.
Brown built its lead with a five-run outburst in the third inning, capitalizing on Dartmouth mistakes. The Bears sent 10 men to the plate, scoring on an RBI double by Mark Benevento, a run-scoring single by Meusy, a passed ball that allowed a run to score and a fielding error by the Dartmouth shortstop that plated another. Only two of the five runs in the frame were earned.
Dartmouth chipped away at an early 7-0 deficit. The Big Green scored two in the second on a two-run single by Sam Andersen and added single runs in the third, sixth and eighth innings. Chris Miller was a bright spot for Dartmouth, going 2 for 3 with two RBIs, including a run-scoring double in the eighth that brought the Big Green within two runs.
Taer Rodriguez added a solo home run for Dartmouth in the sixth.
Brown starter Dylan Reid earned the win despite an unusual line. He pitched six innings, allowing four earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts. He did not issue a walk. Christian Keel navigated the eighth inning, allowing one run, and Camren Piwnicki pitched a perfect seventh. The Bears’ bullpen combined for three innings of one-hit, one-run relief.
For Dartmouth, Nathan Matoush provided exceptional relief, throwing 3.1 scoreless innings and allowing just one hit while striking out two. Mac Burke struck out the side in a scoreless ninth.
The game concluded a long day of baseball that began with an afternoon contest, stretching into the evening under the lights. The result defied the pregame projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast an 8-2 Brown victory. Their ELO system gave Brown a narrow 50.40 percent probability to win.
Brown returns to action Tuesday at home against Holy Cross. Dartmouth will host Siena on Wednesday.
