Bulldogs, Huskies Set for Nonconference Clash in Seattle

SEATTLE (Interstat) — The Gonzaga Bulldogs and Washington Huskies meet Monday at Husky Ballpark in a nonconference midweek matchup between regional foes navigating similar seasons.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. PDT.

Gonzaga (15-14) arrives after taking two of three from Pepperdine over the weekend, including a 4-3 win Saturday. Washington (14-16) looks to rebound after a 4-2 home loss to Valparaiso on Saturday snapped a three-game winning streak.

A key matchup will feature Gonzaga’s recent starting pitching against Washington’s bullpen. Bulldogs right-hander Karsten Sweum is a player to watch. Over his last three appearances, all wins, he has allowed just four hits and two earned runs over 16 2/3 innings, striking out 20. In his last start, he went 5 2/3 innings with eight strikeouts in the win over Pepperdine.

For the Huskies, reliever Carson Boesel has been a steadying force. In his last three outings, spanning seven innings, he has allowed one earned run on six hits while striking out eight. He pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief in Saturday’s loss.

Offensively, Gonzaga’s Noah Meffert is coming off a 3-for-4 performance with a home run Saturday. Washington catcher Ethan Swidler had two of the Huskies’ six hits in that contest.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projected final score is Gonzaga 8, Washington 6.

The teams will meet again Tuesday at Husky Ballpark before Washington begins a road series at Minnesota and Gonzaga hosts Portland in West Coast Conference play.
