Penn State at Nebraska
LINCOLN, Neb. (Interstat) — In a wild Sunday afternoon affair that saw all 14 runs scored in the first three innings, the Nebraska Cornhuskers rallied from an early six-run deficit to complete a three-game series sweep of the Penn State Nittany Lions with an 8-6 victory at Haymarket Park.
The game, which began under sunny, 60-degree skies with a 6 mph wind from the west-northwest, turned on a monumental second inning by the Cornhuskers’ offense after Penn State designated hitter Michael Anderson had staked his team to a shocking lead.
Anderson provided all of Penn State’s offense, launching a two-run homer in the first inning and a solo shot in the third. His first blast followed a single by Davis, immediately putting the struggling Nittany Lions ahead 2-0. The visitors were not done in the frame, capitalizing on Nebraska starter Cooper Katskee’s early command issues to eventually bat around and plate four more runs before an out was recorded, taking a 6-0 lead before many in the evening crowd had settled in.
That advantage proved short-lived. Nebraska responded ferociously in the bottom of the second, sending 10 men to the plate and scoring five runs on six hits to chase Penn State starter Shayter. The key blows were an RBI double by Josh Overbeek, a two-run homer by Drew Grego, and a two-run double by catcher Jeter Worthley, cutting the deficit to 6-5.
The most important sequence of the game occurred in the bottom of the third. After the first two batters reached, Penn State reliever Mason Butash entered. Butash would go on to throw three perfect innings of relief, but his first batter was Nebraska second baseman Rhett Stokes. Stokes demolished a three-run homer down the left-field line, completing the comeback and giving Nebraska an 8-6 lead it would not relinquish.
From that point, the game transformed into a battle of bullpens. Katskee, after his rocky first inning, settled in masterfully. The Nebraska right-hander earned the win by pitching seven complete innings, allowing three earned runs on just three hits while striking out six. He retired 16 of the final 18 batters he faced after Anderson’s third-inning homer.
Penn State’s bullpen quartet of Butash, Dimond Loosli, Ben DeMell and Mason Horwat combined for 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing only three hits and keeping the Nittany Lions within striking distance. Their effort gave Penn State a chance in the ninth.
Trailing by two, Penn State mounted a final threat against the Nebraska bullpen. A walk, a single and another walk loaded the bases with no outs. A walk to Smith forced in a run, making it 8-6. Nebraska then turned to J’Shawn Unger, who induced a crucial 4-6-3 double play. A run scored on a wild pitch during the next at-bat to make it 8-7, but Unger secured the final out to earn the save and seal the series sweep.
Nebraska (26-6, 6-3 Big Ten) outhit Penn State 13-4 and demonstrated the resilience that has defined its season. The Cornhuskers’ comeback victory exceeded the projection of Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 7-3 Nebraska win.
Penn State (8-21, 1-8) was led by Anderson’s two-homer, three-RBI performance, but the team managed only two other hits the entire game. The Nittany Lions have now lost five straight games.
Nebraska next hosts Kansas in a midweek contest on Tuesday before traveling to Oregon for a non-conference series. Penn State returns home to host a doubleheader against Fairleigh Dickinson and Rider on Tuesday before a Big Ten road series at Ohio State.
