Charlotte at East Carolina
GREENVILLE, N.C. (Interstat) — In a wild, back-and-forth American Athletic Conference contest defined by explosive innings and a relentless offensive display, the East Carolina Pirates outlasted the Charlotte 49ers 12-9 on Friday afternoon at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
The game, which featured 30 combined hits and multiple lead changes, saw East Carolina overcome an early five-run deficit before pulling away late to secure the series-opening victory and improve to 19-12 overall and 1-0 in league play. Charlotte fell to 18-12.
The most important part of the game unfolded in the middle innings as East Carolina systematically erased Charlotte’s commanding lead. The 49ers had built a 9-2 advantage by the top of the third inning, powered by a two-run homer from Cale Stricklin in the second and a three-run blast from Johnny Sutryk in the third.
The Pirates began their methodical comeback in the fifth, scoring three runs to cut the deficit to 9-5. The rally was fueled by small ball and timely hitting, including a sacrifice bunt, a run-scoring groundout and RBI singles from Wallace and pinch-hitter Alex Bouche.
The momentum fully shifted in the bottom of the seventh. After relievers Ethan Rose and Sean Jenkins had quieted Charlotte’s bats, the Pirates’ offense erupted. Walker Barron and Matthew Lashley led off the inning with back-to-back solo home runs to tie the game at 9. The onslaught continued as East Carolina batted around, adding another run on a clutch RBI single from center fielder Grayden Lenahan to take a 10-9 lead, their first of the night.
Lenahan was the top star for East Carolina, going 3 for 4 with a double, a triple and three RBIs, continuing a strong stretch at the plate. Bouche, who stayed in the game after his pinch-hit appearance, provided critical insurance in the eighth inning with a two-run homer, finishing with three RBIs.
Charlotte’s early offensive burst, which produced 13 hits, was ultimately undone by its pitching staff’s inability to contain the Pirates’ lineup. Starter Eddie Copper was charged with three earned runs over four innings, but the bullpen surrendered nine runs over the final four frames.
East Carolina’s relief corps, conversely, was stellar. Rose earned the win with two scoreless innings, striking out three, and Jenkins picked up the save with two perfect innings of his own, striking out two. Sebastian Perez recorded a scoreless inning for Charlotte in the loss.
The victory defied the pregame projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a narrow 7-6 win for Charlotte, though the Pirates’ 64% win probability based on ELO ratings proved more accurate.
The two teams continue the three-game series on Saturday. Charlotte will next travel to face North Carolina on Tuesday, while East Carolina hosts Duke the same day.
