Southern at LSU
BATON ROUGE, La. (Interstat) — The LSU Tigers erupted for 11 runs across the fourth and fifth innings Tuesday night, turning a tight contest into a rout and defeating the Southern Jaguars 16-6 at Alex Box Stadium/Skip Bertman Field.
The game, which began after a weather delay and was interrupted by another in the fourth inning, saw the visiting Jaguars seize an early six-run lead before the Tigers’ potent offense awakened.
Southern struck first with a three-run second inning. After Kamero Byrd walked and Xavier Bradley doubled, Jacoby Radcliffe delivered a two-run single to right field. Radcliffe later scored on an RBI single up the middle by Ryan Hunter.
The Jaguars extended their lead to six runs in the third, capitalizing on a costly LSU error. With the bases loaded, Kenyon Hughes reached on a fielding error by the left fielder, allowing all three runners to score.
LSU began its methodical comeback in the bottom of the second on a solo home run by Milam. The Tigers then exploded in the third inning. After loading the bases, Ashton Curiel launched a grand slam over the right field wall, a four-run blast that immediately cut the deficit to one run.
The most pivotal sequence of the game occurred in the bottom of the fourth inning, which spanned over an hour due to weather. Immediately after play resumed at 9:49 p.m., the Tigers completed their comeback and took control. Milam led off with his second solo homer of the night to tie the game. Dardar followed with a triple and scored on an RBI single by Arrambide to give LSU its first lead at 7-6.
The Tigers did not stop there. They sent 14 batters to the plate in the inning, scoring eight runs total. The rally included a sacrifice fly, a double steal of home, and a two-run homer by Pearson, stretching the lead to 12-6.
LSU added four more runs in the fifth inning to seal the victory. Pearson contributed another two-run single, and Dardar drove in a run with a single.
Southern managed only five hits in the game, with Radcliffe collecting two of them and driving in two runs. Hunter added an RBI single. The Jaguars’ early offense was fueled by patience at the plate and timely hitting, but they could not sustain it against a parade of LSU pitchers.
LSU finished with 13 hits. Milam was 3-for-4 with two solo home runs. Pearson drove in four runs on his homer and single, while Curiel’s grand slam accounted for his four RBIs. Serna Jr. had three hits and scored three runs.
The win improved LSU’s record to 20-10, while Southern fell to 8-17.
LSU is scheduled to begin a three-game Southeastern Conference series at Tennessee on Friday. Southern will open a Southwestern Athletic Conference series at home against Bethune-Cookman on Friday.
