Nevada at Gonzaga
SPOKANE, Wash. (Interstat) — A four-run fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run triple from Ricky Sanchez, propelled the Gonzaga Bulldogs to a 7-2 victory over the Nevada Wolf Pack in nonconference baseball action Monday evening at Washington Trust Field and Patterson Baseball Complex.
The win evened Gonzaga’s season record at 13-13, while Nevada fell to 15-10.
The Wolf Pack struck quickly against Gonzaga starter Gabe Brabec in the first inning. Rominic Quiban walked, advanced to third on a ground-rule double by Jayce Dobie, and scored on Junhyuk Kwon’s sacrifice fly to right field. Nevada managed just one run despite having runners at the corners with no outs, as Brabec recorded two strikeouts to limit the damage.
Gonzaga answered with a run in the bottom of the frame off Nevada starter Nik Miller. Mikey Bell walked, moved to third on a double by Maddox Haley, and scored on a fielder’s choice grounder by Jacob Wrubleski.
The game remained a 2-1 Nevada lead until the decisive bottom of the fourth. With one out, Tommy Eisenstat singled and Noah Meffert walked. Hudson Shupe then tied the game with an RBI single to shortstop. After a groundout advanced both runners, Sanchez cleared the bases with a triple to right field, giving the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead and chasing Miller from the game.
That swing proved to be the most important part of the contest, shifting momentum permanently to the home side. Sanchez finished the day 3 for 5 with two RBIs.
From there, the Gonzaga bullpen took over. Brabec earned the win, allowing two runs on five hits over six innings, walking three and striking out four. Reliever Garrett Gores provided three scoreless innings to secure the save, surrendering just two hits.
Nevada’s offense, which produced seven hits, was stymied after the first and struggled to capitalize on opportunities, hitting into three double plays. Aiden Pollock, Luke Schat and Eddie Tierney followed Miller on the mound for the Wolf Pack.
Gonzaga added insurance in the eighth inning off Tierney. Shupe, who was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, drove in Eisenstat with a double. Landon White followed with another two-run double, scoring Meffert and Shupe to extend the lead to 7-2.
Nevada’s final run came in the ninth when pinch-hitter Noah Blythe launched a solo home run to left field off Gores. The next batter, Quiban, grounded out to end the game.
The result defied the pregame projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which forecast a narrow 7-6 Gonzaga victory, though the Bulldogs’ win probability was pegged at 55.7%.
Nevada looks to rebound on April 6 at Sacramento State. Gonzaga opens a three-game home series against Pepperdine on April 2.
