Cal Poly at Loyola Marymount
LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — A surging Cal Poly team will look to continue its strong start when it visits struggling Loyola Marymount in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday at Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena.
First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. PDT under cloudy skies with a game-time temperature near 72 degrees.
The Mustangs (14-8) enter having won 10 of their last 13 games, including a series victory over UC Davis last weekend. They dropped the series finale Monday, 8-2, but boast one of the West Coast’s hottest pitchers in scheduled starter Carson Turnquist.
Turnquist, a right-hander, has been dominant in his last three outings, allowing just one earned run over 15 1/3 innings. He tossed five scoreless innings with one hit and seven strikeouts in a win over Cal State Bakersfield on March 15 and followed with 5 1/3 hitless innings at Hawaii on March 8. In his last start, he gave up two earned runs over five innings against UC Davis.
He will be opposed by Loyola Marymount’s Avery Laine. The Lions’ left-hander has experienced recent struggles, allowing 15 earned runs over his last 9 innings across three appearances. His last quality outing was a six-inning, one-run win over Davidson on March 1.
The Lions (7-19) are mired in a difficult stretch, having lost 15 of their last 17 games. They were swept at home by Portland last weekend, with all three losses by two runs or fewer, including a 4-3 defeat Sunday.
Cal Poly’s offense has been potent, scoring eight or more runs in seven of its last 11 contests. Loyola Marymount’s pitching staff has been taxed, surrendering double-digit runs in nine games this season.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, Cal Poly is projected to win 8-2.
Following Wednesday’s game, Cal Poly opens a three-game series at UC Riverside on Friday. Loyola Marymount begins West Coast Conference play at Santa Clara on Friday.
