Oklahoma State at Missouri State
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (Interstat) — Carter Bergman broke out of a brief slump with two home runs and six RBIs, and Logan Fyffe added a grand slam as Missouri State routed Oklahoma State 16-2 in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday night at Hammons Field.
The game’s decisive moment came early and emphatically. After Oklahoma State stranded a runner at third in the top of the first inning, Missouri State’s offense erupted against Cowboys starter Phillips in the bottom half. With the bases loaded and one out, Bergman, the Bears’ designated hitter who was hitless in his previous six at-bats, crushed a grand slam to left-center field, instantly turning a scoreless tie into a 4-0 lead.
Missouri State (16-7) did not relent. In the second inning, facing reliever Winslow, Fyffe launched another grand slam, this one to left field, to extend the Bears’ lead to 8-0. The two first-inning swings accounted for eight runs and set a dominant tone for the remainder of the game.
Bergman added a solo homer, again to left-center, in the fourth inning. He finished 2 for 4. Fyffe went 3 for 5 with five RBIs. Gabe Roessler also had three hits, including a triple and a double, and drove in a run.
The offensive barrage provided more than enough support for Missouri State pitchers Max Knight and Jason Schaaf. Knight started and earned the win, allowing two runs on five hits over 4 1/3 innings while striking out seven. Schaaf was dominant in relief, striking out eight of the 10 batters he faced over 2 2/3 perfect innings.
Oklahoma State (16-9) managed just seven hits and scored its only runs in the fifth inning. Kollin Ritchie hit a two-run double with the bases loaded to cut the deficit to 9-2, but Schaaf entered the game and struck out the next two batters to end the threat.
Missouri State sent 13 men to the plate in a seven-run fifth inning, capitalizing on two Oklahoma State errors, a wild pitch and RBI singles from Fyffe and Roessler. Taeg Gollert added a solo home run in the sixth inning to complete the scoring.
Oklahoma State relievers Jake Kennedy, Parker Jennings and TP Wentworth combined for 2 2/3 scoreless innings late in the game.
The result avenged an 8-7 home loss for the Cowboys against Missouri State on March 3. It also defied pregame projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a 7-6 Missouri State victory and whose ELO system gave Oklahoma State a 66.7% chance to win.
Missouri State next travels for a three-game series at Dallas Baptist starting Friday. Oklahoma State begins a three-game series at BYU on Thursday.
