Central Arkansas at Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Interstat) — The Arkansas Razorbacks erupted for 14 runs over two innings Tuesday night, turning a tight contest into a 15-2 rout of the Central Arkansas Bears at Baum Stadium.

The game’s defining moment arrived in the bottom of the fifth inning. Trailing 2-1 and held hitless through four frames by Central Arkansas starter Jacob Pannell, the Razorbacks’ offense exploded. The rally began with a walk to TJ Pompey and a single by Ruiz. Wehiwa Kozeal’s RBI single tied the game and chased Pannell, who was charged with five runs.

What followed was a relentless display of two-out hitting against the Bears’ bullpen. Zack Stewart drew a bases-loaded walk to give Arkansas its first lead. Maika Niu followed with a two-run double, and after a walk and a stolen base, pinch-hitter Carter Rutenbar drove in another with a double. The capper came from Pompey, who launched a grand slam over the left-field wall, his first of two homers on the night, to cap an 11-run inning and give Arkansas an 11-2 lead.

Pompey, who had been in a minor slump, finished 2 for 2 with two walks, five RBIs and three runs scored. His second homer, a solo shot in the sixth, provided the final margin. Rutenbar added a three-run homer in that same sixth inning, finishing with four RBIs.

The offensive onslaught overshadowed a strong start from Central Arkansas (13-12), which built its early lead against Arkansas starter Peyton Lee. The Bears scored in the second on an RBI single by Jaxon Schattle and added a run in the third on a solo home run by Zeb Allen.

Arkansas (19-7) managed just one hit through four innings — a solo homer by Stewart in the fourth — before the fifth-inning breakout. The Razorbacks finished with 10 hits, all coming from the fourth inning onward.

The Razorbacks’ bullpen was dominant in relief. Parker Coil earned the win with three innings of one-run ball. Mark Brissey and Tye Briscoe then closed the game with perfect innings of relief, each striking out the side in order in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively.

Central Arkansas, which had won three of its last four, was limited to five hits and saw its three-game winning streak snapped.

Arkansas will open a three-game Southeastern Conference series at home against Florida on Friday. Central Arkansas returns home to begin a series with Austin Peay on Friday.
