South Alabama vs. Auburn
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Interstat) — Andreas Alvarez dominated over seven shutout innings and Chris Rembert drove in four runs, including a late home run, as Auburn rolled to a 10-0 victory over South Alabama on Tuesday night at Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
The Tigers (20-4) scored in four different innings and racked up 12 hits to support another stellar outing from Alvarez, who stifled the Jaguars (16-9) and outshone a parade of six South Alabama pitchers.
Auburn set the tone early against Jaguars starter Hayden O’Dell. In the bottom of the first, Rembert singled and scored on Cooper Fralick’s RBI double down the right field line for a 1-0 lead. The Tigers broke it open in the second. Back-to-back singles by Bobby McCraine and Cade Belyeu set the table for Bristol Carter, whose RBI single made it 2-0. Carter then stole second and scored, along with Belyeu, on Rembert’s sacrifice fly to center.
The most critical sequence of the game came in the fourth inning, which ultimately chased O’Dell and put the contest out of reach. With two on and one out, Rembert delivered again, lacing a two-run single through the left side to score Landon Steele and McCraine, extending Auburn’s lead to 5-0. That hit prompted a pitching change, but the damage was done.
Alvarez (3-0) was in complete control, scattering four hits and striking out eight without issuing a walk. The Jaguars managed only two runners to reach second base against him, with their best threat coming in the third inning after singles by Nick Richard and Brennon Wrigley. A failed pickoff attempt and a wild pitch moved Wrigley to third with one out, but Alvarez struck out Duncan Mathe and got Stewart Puck to fly out to end the inning.
South Alabama’s bullpen found some temporary relief with scoreless outings from Tyler Smith and Max Miller, but Auburn erupted again in the seventh. With the bases loaded and two outs, Belyeu ripped a two-run double to right-center. Carter followed with a two-run single, though he was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double, capping a four-run frame that made it 9-0.
Rembert provided the final exclamation point in the eighth, launching a solo home run to left field off reliever Brian Garmon.
O’Dell (2-2) took the loss for South Alabama, allowing five earned runs on seven hits over 3 2/3 innings. The Jaguars, coming off a series win over Louisiana-Monroe, were shut out for the first time this season and managed just four hits total.
Auburn’s victory, which exceeded Interstat’s projection of a 7-5 Tigers win, sets the stage for a pivotal Southeastern Conference road series at Alabama beginning Friday. South Alabama opens Sun Belt Conference play at home against Old Dominion on Friday.
