South Alabama vs. Auburn
AUBURN, Ala. (Interstat) — Two of the state’s hottest baseball teams will meet Tuesday when the Auburn Tigers host the South Alabama Jaguars in a midweek non-conference clash at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex in Montgomery.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. CDT under cloudy skies with a game-time temperature near 75 degrees.
Auburn (19-4) enters riding high despite a 5-0 loss to Texas on Sunday that snapped a six-game winning streak. The Tigers boast one of the nation’s top records and are coming off a series win over the then-Longhorns. Their bullpen has been a strength, highlighted by reliever Jett Johnston. The right-hander has been sharp, allowing just one earned run over his last 10 1/3 innings across seven appearances, including 2 1/3 scoreless frames in Sunday’s defeat.
South Alabama (16-8) counters with momentum from a 16-4 rout of Louisiana-Monroe on Sunday, where the Jaguars’ offense exploded for 16 hits. Designated hitter Nathan Wood powered the win, launching a home run and driving in four runs. For the season, Wood is hitting .303 with a team-high five homers and 21 RBIs.
The Jaguars have won seven of their last ten but face a steep challenge against an Auburn squad that is 14-1 at home this season. The Tigers’ potent offense, averaging over eight runs per game, will test a South Alabama pitching staff that has a 4.02 collective ERA.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, Auburn is projected to win 7-5.
The game serves as a final tune-up before both teams dive into conference play this weekend. Auburn opens a pivotal Southeastern Conference road series at Alabama on Friday, while South Alabama begins Sun Belt Conference action at home against Old Dominion.
