Jacksonville State at UAB
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Interstat) — A surging Jacksonville State squad riding a five-game winning streak will face a UAB team looking to build momentum in a non-conference midweek clash Tuesday at Jerry D. Young Memorial Field.
The Gamecocks (21-4), one of the nation’s hottest teams, arrive after a dominant weekend sweep of Western Kentucky, culminating in a 10-0 rout Sunday. UAB (14-10) salvaged its series at East Carolina with an 11-4 victory on Sunday after dropping the first two games.
Jacksonville State’s offense is powered by second baseman Cooper Blauser, who is coming off a 3-for-5, five-RBI performance that included a home run in Sunday’s win. Over his last 10 games, Blauser has driven in 18 runs. His presence anchors a lineup that has averaged 8.4 runs during its current win streak.
The Blazers counter with their own potent bat in left fielder John Paul Head. Head was instrumental in Sunday’s win, going 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs. He has shown explosive power this month, including a three-homer, six-RBI game against Middle Tennessee on March 7.
On the mound, the Gamecocks received strong pitching in the series finale against Western Kentucky, with Steven Cash and Skyler Hutto combining for 5 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. UAB’s Brendan Conner and Carter Samuelson provided key scoreless relief outings in their Sunday victory.
The teams enter with contrasting recent trajectories. Jacksonville State has won 14 of its last 15 games, with its only loss in that span a 7-6 defeat to Samford on March 17. UAB has been inconsistent, following a six-game winning streak in early March by losing four of its next six before Sunday’s win.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a high-scoring affair, favoring Jacksonville State 8-7.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. CDT under cloudy skies with a temperature near 69 degrees.
Following this game, Jacksonville State opens a Conference USA series at Louisiana Tech on Friday. UAB begins American Athletic Conference play at home against Tulane on Friday.
