Stonehill at Brown
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Interstat) — Daniel Lang and four relievers combined on a five-hit shutout Tuesday afternoon as the Stonehill Skyhawks silenced the Brown Bears 6-0 in non-conference baseball at Murray Stadium.
The Skyhawks, projected as underdogs by national metrics, defied a simulated forecast of a 6-5 Brown victory and an ELO system giving the Bears a 52.2% win probability. Instead, Stonehill’s pitching staff dominated from the outset, holding a Brown lineup that had averaged over six runs per game in its last five contests to just five singles and two walks.
The most important sequence of the game came in the bottom of the first inning, immediately setting the tone for the evening. After Stonehill was retired in order in the top half, Brown threatened against Lang. Mark Henshon and Alex Benevento hit back-to-back one-out singles, putting runners on first and second. Lang calmly induced a flyout to left field from DJ Dillehay, then fielded a comebacker from Logan Meusy to start a pitcher-to-second base fielder’s choice that ended the inning. That early escape stifled any home-team momentum and allowed Stonehill’s offense to seize control.
The Skyhawks broke through in the third against Brown starter Bryan Yang. Tyler Redden reached on a throwing error and Sam Parks followed with a single. Michael Rickert then delivered a two-run single to right-center field, scoring both Redden and Parks, with the latter run being unearned due to the error.
Stonehill extended its lead in the fourth. After Nick Lundquist singled, second baseman Armanis Romero launched a two-run homer down the left-field line, chasing Yang and giving the Skyhawks a 4-0 advantage.
Lang, the top star for Stonehill, was brilliant over five scoreless innings. He allowed no hits after the first-inning singles, finishing his outing with five strikeouts and two walks. He faced the minimum over his final four frames, a stark improvement from his previous outing against Rhode Island where he allowed two earned runs in 3 1/3 innings.
The Skyhawks added single runs in the sixth and ninth innings. In the sixth, Romero singled, advanced to third on a hit from Redden, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Rickert. In the ninth, Parks walked, advanced to third on Rickert’s third hit of the afternoon, and scored on a bases-loaded walk by Nathan Kearney.
Stonehill’s bullpen was flawless. Hunter Bell worked two perfect innings with two strikeouts. Alex Cook pitched a scoreless eighth, stranding a runner at third after a wild pitch. Noah Basgaard closed it in the ninth, striking out two batters despite allowing two singles and a walk to load the bases before a final flyout sealed the combined shutout.
Brown used six pitchers, with Camren Piwnicki providing 2 2/3 hitless innings of relief. The Bears’ offense never advanced a runner past second base after the first inning.
With the win, Stonehill improved to 7-13 on the season, while Brown fell to 7-11. The Skyhawks have now won four of their last five games. Stonehill opens a three-game series at home against Central Connecticut on Friday. Brown begins Ivy League play Saturday with a doubleheader against Princeton at home.
