New Orleans at Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss. (Interstat) — The New Orleans Privateers used a dominant collective pitching performance and capitalized on a cascade of Jackson State errors to shut out the Tigers 7-0 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday evening at Braddy Field.

The game, a rematch of a March 3 contest won 11-6 by New Orleans, was defined by the Privateers’ bullpen. Six New Orleans relievers combined to throw seven hitless innings, striking out 11 batters and walking only three after starter Tyler Velino worked two scoreless frames.

The most important sequence of the game unfolded in the top of the eighth inning, breaking open what had been a tight 2-0 contest. With the game still within reach for Jackson State, the Privateers exploded for five runs, all unearned, fueled by critical Tigers miscues.

Kruise Newman led off the inning with a double against reliever Talmadge Davis and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Eli Tidwell then drove him home with a triple to right-center field, his second RBI hit of the game. After Josh Hoffman was hit by a pitch, Evan Rogers laid down another sacrifice bunt. A throwing error by Jackson State catcher Edwin Lemus Hudson Jr. on the play allowed Tidwell to score and opened the floodgates. Another error, this time a muffed throw by first baseman Wilbert Perez, allowed two more runs to cross. Dylan Biddick capped the inning with an RBI groundout, plating the fifth run of the frame.

That outburst rendered moot what had been a strong start by Jackson State’s Manuel Toro, who allowed just one hit over three scoreless innings. The Tigers’ defense, however, committed four errors leading directly to four unearned runs.

New Orleans scratched across its first two runs earlier against the Jackson State bullpen. In the fourth, pinch-hitter Adrian Dominguez walked, moved to second on another walk, and scored on Tidwell’s RBI double. An unearned run came home in the fifth when Kareh Valentin scored after reaching on a bunt single and advancing on a pair of errors.

The Privateers’ relievers extinguished any potential Jackson State rally. After Velino departed, Skylar Jones, Gus Rogers, Reid Leonard, Luke Lycette and Cortland Clarke stifled the Tigers’ lineup. Jackson State managed six hits, all off Velino, but went 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position and stranded seven baserunners.

Tidwell led the New Orleans offense, going 2 for 5 with a double, a triple and two RBIs. Dominguez, who remained in the game as the designated hitter, went 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

The win improved New Orleans to 11-16 overall, while Jackson State fell to 10-13. The victory defied the pregame projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 6-3 Jackson State win, though their ELO rating system had favored the Privateers with a 64.1% win probability.

New Orleans travels to face Southeastern Louisiana for a three-game series starting Friday. Jackson State opens a Southwestern Athletic Conference series at Bethune-Cookman, also on Friday.
