Murray State at Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Interstat) — The Kentucky Wildcats erupted for seven runs in a decisive second inning and pulled away late to defeat the Murray State Racers 14-4 on Tuesday evening at Kentucky Proud Park.

The game, which began in the afternoon and concluded under the lights, saw the Wildcats improve to 20-4 overall, while the Racers fell to 15-9.

Murray State struck first, capitalizing on early wildness from Kentucky starter Will Coleman. Luke Mistone was hit by a pitch and Kris Hokenso walked in the top of the first before Conner Cunningham delivered a two-out single to right field to plate Mistone for a 1-0 lead.

The advantage was short-lived. Kentucky responded immediately in the bottom half, chasing Murray State starter Reese Oakley after he loaded the bases with three consecutive walks. Reliever Carter Boyd entered and surrendered a two-run single to Hudson Brown. Ethan Hindle followed with a sacrifice bunt to tie the game at 3-3, completing the first-inning rally.

The most important sequence of the game unfolded in the bottom of the second inning, where Kentucky seized control for good. The Wildcats sent 11 batters to the plate, scoring seven runs on only three hits while leveraging three walks, a hit batter and a passed ball. The inning was highlighted by Brown’s second two-run single of the game and a run-scoring double from Hindle. The rally turned a 4-3 deficit into a commanding 7-4 lead, a margin the Racers would not challenge.

Kentucky’s bullpen took over from there, silencing the Murray State offense. Following Chase Alderman’s one inning of work, a procession of Wildcats relievers dominated. Tristan Hunter struck out the side in the fourth. Jackson Soucie struck out two in a perfect fifth. Jack Sams worked a scoreless seventh. Combined, five Kentucky relievers pitched six innings, allowing just one unearned run on two hits while striking out nine.

Murray State managed a final push in the sixth, scoring two runs on Cunningham’s RBI double and an RBI single from Kingsley Gutierrez to cut the deficit to 8-6. But Kentucky put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth, sending 12 men to bat and scoring six more runs. The Wildcats drew four walks and were hit by two pitches in the frame, with run-scoring free passes issued to Trey Bell and Tyler Cerny. James Tharnish capped the outburst with a two-run triple, making it 14-6.

Offensively, Kentucky’s Hudson Brown led the way, going 2 for 2 with two walks and four RBIs. Ethan Hindle added a double, a walk, was hit by a pitch and drove in two runs. Despite the lopsided final score, both teams finished with five hits. Murray State’s Conner Cunningham was a bright spot, going 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs.

Murray State reliever Parker Patterson provided stability out of the bullpen, tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts after entering during the Wildcats’ second-inning onslaught.

The victory extends Kentucky’s strong start to the season as it prepares to open a Southeastern Conference series at LSU on Friday. Murray State, which had won three straight entering the game, will look to rebound as it travels to face Bradley on Friday.

The outcome exceeded the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 7-5 Kentucky victory. The Wildcats entered with a 75.60 percent win probability according to the service’s ELO system.
