Michigan State at Central Michigan
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (Interstat) — Randy Seymour launched three home runs and drove in six runs as Michigan State erupted for a 19-8 road victory over Central Michigan in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday at Bill Theunissen Stadium.
The Spartans’ offense, which had been held to three runs or fewer in three of its last four games, broke out in a major way, pounding out 19 hits. The 19-run output was a season high and provided a stark contrast to Interstat’s game simulator, which had projected a low-scoring 4-3 win for the Chippewas.
The most important sequence of the game came in the top of the fourth inning, with Michigan State clinging to a 7-6 lead after Central Michigan had rallied from an early four-run deficit. The Spartans had two on with two outs when Seymour stepped in. The first baseman crushed his second homer of the afternoon, a three-run shot to left-center field, to extend the lead to 10-6. That blast sparked the Spartans, who steadily pulled away and never let the Chippewas back within striking distance.
Seymour, the clear top star for Michigan State, added a two-run homer in the sixth inning to complete the hat trick. He finished 3 for 7. His performance continued a powerful stretch, coming just three days after he drove in five runs in a win over Iowa.
Dayton Murphy went 3 for 6 with four RBIs, and Khamaree Thomas drove in four runs on two hits for the Spartans. Pinch-hitter Parker Picot also homered, a two-run drive in the eighth inning.
Central Michigan was led by designated hitter Cole Prout, who went 2 for 3 with a three-run homer in the first inning and four RBIs. His first-inning blast, which followed a sacrifice fly by Jacob Correa, briefly gave the Chippewas a 4-1 lead after Michigan State had scored first on a sacrifice fly by Sam Sturgess.
The Spartans answered immediately in the second, reclaiming the lead for good on a three-run double by Thomas. After Central Michigan closed to 7-6 in the third, Seymour’s second homer began the rout.
Michigan State’s bullpen was dominant, combining for 6 2/3 scoreless innings after the third. Five relievers — Brady Chambers, Gannon Grundman, Nolan Higgins, Ben Kochany and Andrew Everson — allowed no hits and struck out six. The Spartans turned two double plays.
Central Michigan grounded into two double plays and used seven pitchers, none recording more than six outs. The Chippewas’ defense committed two errors, leading to two unearned runs in the ninth.
The victory improved Michigan State’s record to 8-15, while Central Michigan fell to 9-12. The teams are scheduled to meet again next Tuesday in East Lansing.
Michigan State opens a three-game Big Ten series at home against Purdue on Friday. Central Michigan begins Mid-American Conference play on the road Friday at Eastern Michigan.
