Cal State Fullerton at UNLV

LAS VEGAS (Interstat) — Gunnar Myro’s fielder’s choice grounder in the seventh inning brought home the go-ahead run, capping a three-run rally that propelled the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels to a 4-3 comeback victory over the Cal State Fullerton Titans in nonconference baseball Tuesday night at Earl Wilson Stadium.

The game’s decisive moment came in a chaotic bottom of the seventh. Trailing 3-2, UNLV loaded the bases with one out against reliever Dylan Nieto. Brock Mayer entered for Cal State Fullerton and walked Jack Salmon on four pitches, forcing in Ayden Garcia to tie the game. Myro then hit a sharp grounder to shortstop. The Titans attempted to start an inning-ending double play, but second baseman Cameron Kim’s relay throw to first was errant, allowing Nin Burns II to score the lead run. A subsequent double play limited the damage, but the Rebels had their first lead at 4-3.

That rally erased a strong effort from Cal State Fullerton’s Paul Contreras, who went 3 for 4 with a solo home run in the eighth inning. His blast to deep center field, which cut the deficit to one run, was one of eight hits for the Titans but not enough to overcome UNLV’s bullpen.

The Rebels’ relief corps was the foundation of the win. After starter Ryan Marton recorded just one out, five relievers combined for 8 2/3 innings of one-run ball. Colton Sundloff was pivotal, delivering two scoreless innings with two strikeouts after entering in the fourth. Jase Evangelista navigated 2 2/3 tense innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out four, including two in the ninth to strand the potential tying run. LJ Manning also contributed two shutout frames.

Cal State Fullerton’s early lead was gifted by a defensive miscue. In the top of the first, Eli Lopez reached on a throwing error by Myro at shortstop, which allowed three unearned runs to score. The Titans managed just one hit in the inning but led 3-0 before UNLV even came to bat.

Drew Barragan got the Rebels on the board immediately in the bottom of the first with a solo home run to left field off Titans starter Nick Santivanez. From there, the game became a battle of bullpens. Cal State Fullerton relievers Masen Swan, Dylan Goff and Brock Mayer combined for 3 2/3 hitless innings, with Goff striking out two in a perfect sixth. However, the Titans’ defense committed three errors, leading to two unearned runs, including the decisive tally in the seventh.

With the win, UNLV improved to 14-8 overall. Cal State Fullerton fell to .500 at 10-10. The victory defied the pregame projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 7-6 UNLV win, though the site’s ELO system had given a slight edge to the Titans.

The Titans continue their road trip with a three-game series at Cal State Northridge starting Friday. UNLV remains at home to host Utah Tech for a two-game set beginning Saturday.
