South Alabama at Louisiana-Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, La. (Interstat) — In a pivotal Sun Belt Conference series finale defined by early offense and stout pitching, Louisiana-Lafayette claimed the rubber match with a 3-1 victory over South Alabama on Sunday evening at M.L. Tigue Moore Field.

The 15th-ranked Ragin’ Cajuns (15-5, 2-1 Sun Belt) scored twice in the first inning and never relinquished the lead, securing the series after the teams split the first two games. The Jaguars fell to 13-7 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

The most critical sequence of the game unfolded immediately, setting the tone for the afternoon. South Alabama’s leadoff hitter, Wright, was hit by a pitch from Louisiana starter JR Tollett, stole second base and scored on a two-out single up the middle by shortstop Marc Stephens. The Jaguars’ early 1-0 lead was short-lived.

Louisiana-Lafayette responded forcefully in the bottom half against South Alabama starter Daniel Gonzalez. Leadoff man LaSalle was also hit by a pitch, bringing third baseman Drew Markle to the plate. Markle drove a triple to the gap in left-center field, easily scoring LaSalle to tie the game. Two batters later, second baseman Rigoberto Hernandez delivered a clutch single to center field, plating Markle to give the Cajuns a 2-1 advantage. The two-run answer established momentum the home team would not surrender.

Tollett (2-0) earned the win, providing six strong innings. He allowed one unearned run on four hits, walking two and striking out four. His performance was marked by effectively working around traffic, as the Jaguars grounded into three double plays, including a line-drive double play to first base in the first inning that snuffed out a potential bigger rally.

Gonzalez (2-2) took the loss for South Alabama, lasting five innings and yielding three runs on six hits. He was undone largely by the first-inning outburst. The Cajuns added an insurance run in the fifth when Hernandez singled home another run, his second RBI of the game.

The Jaguars’ offense, which had averaged over seven runs per game in its previous five contests, was stifled. After Stephens’ first-inning RBI single, South Alabama managed only three more hits and advanced just two runners into scoring position. Reliever Cody Brasch secured his first save of the season with two perfect innings, striking out three.

Jaxon Shineflew provided excellent relief for South Alabama, tossing three scoreless innings and allowing just one hit to keep the game within reach.

The victory improved Louisiana-Lafayette’s record in one-run games this season to 5-1, while South Alabama dropped its second straight one-run decision after winning the series opener 3-2 on Friday.

Interstat’s pregame projections, which had favored the Jaguars 8-7 in a high-scoring affair, were upended by the dominant pitching and defensive performance. The Ragin’ Cajuns’ ELO rating had given them a 59% probability to win.

South Alabama returns home to face Alabama on Tuesday night. Louisiana-Lafayette travels to face Houston on Wednesday before resuming Sun Belt play next weekend at Texas State.
