Alcorn State at Alabama A&M

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Interstat) — A six-run sixth inning, fueled by wild pitches and timely hitting, propelled Alabama A&M to a 10-6 victory over Alcorn State in a Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball game Sunday at Bulldog Field.

The comeback win secured the weekend series for the Bulldogs after the teams split the first two games.

Alcorn State (2-16, 1-2 SWAC) built an early lead with a four-run second inning, capitalizing on Alabama A&M defensive miscues. With two outs and the bases loaded, Julian Jarrett delivered a two-run single to left-center field. Two more runs scored on a hit-by-pitch and an error, staking the Braves to a 4-0 advantage.

The Braves extended their lead to 6-2 in the fourth on an RBI double by Jarrett and a run-scoring single from Rayfield Adams III. Jarrett finished 2 for 5 with three RBIs for Alcorn State.

Alabama A&M (5-14, 2-1) began chipping away in the second on Brycen Hammonds’ two-run single. The Bulldogs added two more in the third on an RBI triple from Tervell Johnson and a fielder’s choice, cutting the deficit to 6-4.

The game turned decisively in the bottom of the sixth. Trailing by two, the Bulldogs sent 11 men to the plate against three Alcorn State pitchers. The inning was defined by control issues, as three wild pitches allowed two critical runs to score. AJ Anderson scored on one wild pitch to make it 6-5, and Tervell Johnson raced home on another to tie the game at 6.

Chris Walker then gave Alabama A&M its first lead with an RBI single, and Brycen Hammonds followed with another run-scoring single to cap the outburst, putting the Bulldogs ahead 8-6. Hammonds went 2 for 5 with three RBIs.

Alabama A&M added insurance in the seventh when Johnson, who was 2 for 2 with three RBIs, laced a two-run single up the middle to score Anderson and Tarris Murray, extending the lead to 10-6.

The Bulldogs’ bullpen sealed the win with six shutout innings of relief. Rynzo Crutcher earned the win with three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. Bryce Dolce picked up the save with three strong innings, surrendering one run on two hits while striking out three.

Alcorn State starter Yoni Castro had a bizarre line, striking out six over 3 2/3 innings but allowing four earned runs on zero official hits, as he walked six and hit a batter.

The most important part of the game was the bottom of the sixth inning. With Alcorn State leading 6-4 and seemingly in control, the Bulldogs’ patient approach at the plate, combined with a complete breakdown of command by the Braves’ pitching staff, transformed the game. The three wild pitches in the frame were not just free bases; they directly produced the tying and go-ahead runs, dismantling Alcorn State’s lead and momentum in a chaotic and decisive sequence that ultimately decided the series.

The victory improved Alabama A&M’s conference record above .500, while Alcorn State continues to search for consistency in a difficult season.
