Miami (FL) at UCF

ORLANDO, Fla. (Interstat) — The Miami Hurricanes built a commanding early lead and weathered a late rally to defeat the UCF Knights 9-5 in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday night at Jay Bergman Field.

The Hurricanes (13-4) seized control immediately, as leadoff hitter Ogden launched the game’s first pitch over the fence for a solo home run, his second of the season. Miami’s offense, which finished with 14 hits, steadily added to its advantage, scoring in four separate innings.

UCF (9-6) chipped away, getting a solo homer from Andrew Williamson in the first inning and an RBI groundout in the third to cut the deficit to 9-2. The Knights’ best chance came in the sixth inning, trailing 9-2. After a leadoff double and a single put runners on the corners, Austin Jacobs connected for a three-run homer to left field, his first of the season, bringing UCF within four runs and energizing the home crowd.

The most important part of the game, however, was Miami’s response in the very next half-inning. After UCF’s rally, the Hurricanes immediately answered with two runs in the top of the seventh to restore a comfortable margin. The inning was fueled by a key RBI single from Daniel Cuvet and a costly throwing error by UCF catcher Hurtado on a sacrifice bunt attempt, which led to both runs being unearned. Alonzo Alvarez capped the rally with a bases-loaded walk, his third RBI of the night.

That sequence effectively halted UCF’s momentum. The Knights managed just one single over the final three innings against a parade of Miami relievers. Hurricanes pitcher Packy Bradley-Cooney was particularly dominant, throwing two perfect innings with three strikeouts in the seventh and eighth. Kevin Schoneboom provided a bright spot for UCF’s bullpen, striking out three in 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief.

Cuvet and Alvarez each drove in multiple runs for Miami. Williamson led UCF’s 12-hit attack, going 3 for 5 with his home run, while Jacobs’ three RBIs on his homer provided the Knights’ biggest blow.

The win gave Miami a season sweep of the two-game series after a 13-inning victory in Coral Gables last month. The Hurricanes now travel to face Duke in an Atlantic Coast Conference series starting Friday. UCF remains at home to host Oklahoma State for a three-game series beginning the same day.

The final score exceeded the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 7-6 Miami victory. The Hurricanes’ ELO win probability was 51.40 percent.
