Abilene Christian at Incarnate Word

SAN ANTONIO (Interstat) — The Incarnate Word Cardinals capitalized on a cascade of Abilene Christian errors and a relentless offensive approach to secure a decisive 13-1 victory over the Wildcats on Wednesday evening at Roadrunner Field. The lopsided result defied pregame projections that heavily favored the visiting Wildcats.

The most critical juncture of the game arrived in the bottom of the second inning, transforming a tight contest into a commanding lead for the Cardinals. Entering the frame tied 1-1, Incarnate Word ignited a two-out rally against Abilene Christian starter Mannis. Singles by Enriquez and Hernandez, followed by a walk to Rucker, loaded the bases. A pitching change brought in Noah Galvan for the Wildcats, but he immediately walked Tabor to force in the go-ahead run. Tony DeJesus then grounded out to second, scoring another, before Jake Weaver delivered the pivotal blow—a two-run single to shallow center that scored Newberry and Tabor. The four-run outburst, giving Incarnate Word a 5-1 lead, was fueled by patience and timely hitting, setting a tone the Wildcats could not overcome.

Abilene Christian’s defensive struggles compounded their woes. The Wildcats committed four errors, leading directly to six unearned runs. A throwing error by second baseman Arias in the first inning set up the tying run. In the fourth, a muffed throw by shortstop Payne on a grounder from Weaver allowed two more runs to score, extending the Cardinals’ lead to 8-1. Another error by third baseman Hardcastle in the fifth facilitated another Incarnate Word run.

The Cardinals’ pitching staff dominated, holding Abilene Christian to just three hits while striking out 14 Wildcats. Starter Emir Encalada set the foundation with two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out three. Gus McKay, Rand Green, Landon Fuller and Josh Bludau then combined for five perfect innings of relief, striking out eight consecutive batters at one point. The quintet retired the final 15 Abilene Christian hitters in order to close the game.

Incarnate Word’s offense was efficient, scoring 13 runs on 10 hits and benefiting from 10 walks. Weaver finished with four RBIs, while DeJesus drove in two. The Cardinals scored in four separate innings, adding three in the fourth, three in the fifth, and two in the sixth to pull away.

Abilene Christian’s lone run was unearned, scoring on a passed ball in the sixth inning after Payne doubled and advanced to third. Their offense never threatened otherwise.

With the win, Incarnate Word evened its season record at 8-8. Abilene Christian fell below .500 at 7-8. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in a rematch next Wednesday in Abilene.

The result stood in stark contrast to the pregame analytics from Interstat, whose game simulator had projected a 6-5 Wildcats victory and gave Abilene Christian a 61 percent probability of winning based on its ELO rating system. Instead, the Cardinals authored a comprehensive performance marked by pitching precision and opportunistic offense.
