Northern Colorado at Utah Valley
VINEYARD, Utah (Interstat) -- Hunter Katschke homered and drove in four runs, leading a relentless Utah Valley offense to a 14-4 victory over Northern Colorado in a nonconference baseball game Sunday evening at Brent Brown Ballpark.
The Wolverines (8-7) pounded out 14 hits and capitalized on a series of Bears miscues to secure the series win, taking three of the first four games in the five-game set. Northern Colorado fell to 2-16.
The most important sequence of the game came in the bottom of the fifth inning, breaking open what had been a tight contest. Utah Valley led 6-4 entering the frame. After Kaden Carpenter singled and Chipper Beck was hit by a pitch, Brody Block’s flyout advanced Carpenter to third. Katschke then delivered the decisive blow, launching a three-run home run to extend the Wolverines’ lead to 9-4.
That blast provided crucial breathing room after Northern Colorado had clawed back into the game. The Bears, held scoreless through five innings by Utah Valley starter Garrett Miller, erupted in the top of the sixth. With two on, Ethan Mooser connected for a three-run homer off Miller, cutting the deficit to 9-4 and chasing the right-hander from the game.
Miller (5.2 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 5 K) earned the win despite Mooser’s blast. Jacob Beltran entered and stranded two runners to end the sixth-inning threat.
Utah Valley immediately answered in the bottom half of the sixth, sending 10 men to the plate and scoring five runs to put the game out of reach. The inning was fueled by a Northern Colorado error, a run-scoring single from Beck, an RBI double from Block, a wild pitch and an RBI double from Katschke. The Wolverines scored four of the runs after two were out.
Northern Colorado’s early 4-0 lead, carried over from the conclusion of Saturday’s suspended game, was erased quickly. Utah Valley scored two in the first on an RBI double from Carpenter and a sacrifice fly from Beck. They tied it in the second on a sacrifice fly following a passed ball and took the lead for good in the third. A balk allowed the tying run to score and a sacrifice fly from Block plated the go-ahead run.
The Bears managed nine hits but left multiple runners on base. Mooser’s home run accounted for all of Northern Colorado’s runs. Mitch Haythorn took the loss for the Bears, allowing four earned runs over three innings of relief work.
Katschke finished 3 for 5 with the homer, two doubles and four RBIs, pacing the Wolverines. Carpenter went 2 for 3 with an RBI and three runs scored. DJ Massey added two hits and an RBI.
Mac Hibben provided a bright spot for Northern Colorado with 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.
The result defied the pregame projection from Interstat, which gave Utah Valley a 74% probability to win and simulated a 7-1 final score.
The teams conclude their five-game series Monday at Brent Brown Ballpark.
