Georgetown at George Washington

ARLINGTON, Va. (Interstat) — In a wild, back-and-forth affair that defied pregame projections, the George Washington Revolutionaries rallied from a seven-run deficit to edge the Georgetown Hoyas 10-9 on Wednesday afternoon and evening at Barcroft Park.

The game, which began in the afternoon and concluded under the lights, saw the Revolutionaries pound out 16 hits to overcome an early 9-0 hole. The victory improved George Washington’s record to 5-6, while Georgetown fell to 8-5. Interstat’s game simulator had projected an 8-5 Georgetown win, with the Hoyas given a 54.3% probability of victory.

Georgetown appeared to seize control with a five-run outburst in the top of the third inning, extending its lead to 9-0. The big blow was a three-run double by Jeremy Sheffield, who finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Connor Peek, who went 2 for 5, added an RBI single earlier in the frame.

The most important part of the game, however, was the monumental bottom of the third inning, where the Revolutionaries sent 13 batters to the plate and scored seven runs to completely shift the momentum. The inning started with a solo home run by Robbie Lavey. After a double and a pitching change, Charlie Walsh launched a solo shot of his own. Later, with two runners on, Conlon Walker delivered the pivotal swing, a three-run homer to right-center field that capped the scoring in the inning and brought George Washington within two runs at 9-7.

Walker, the top star for George Washington, broke out of a recent slump with a 3-for-4 performance, including the crucial home run and three RBIs. He had been 2 for 14 over his previous four games.

The Revolutionaries continued their comeback, tying the game in the sixth inning on an RBI single from Walsh, who finished 2 for 5 with a homer and two RBIs. They then took their first lead in the seventh. With two outs and runners on first and second, Lavey delivered again, lacing a single to left field to score pinch-runner J Kent with what proved to be the decisive run. Lavey was 3 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs.

Georgetown threatened in the eighth, scoring twice to cut the deficit to one run. A Solomon AJ RBI single and a run-scoring single from Trav Ilitch made it 10-9, but Ilitch was thrown out at second to end the rally. The Hoyas put the tying run on base in the ninth but could not advance him.

The Georgetown offense managed 10 hits but grounded into two double plays, stalling potential rallies. The Hoyas’ bullpen had several bright spots in the loss, with Griffin O’Connor, Ethan Rucker and Matt Bruno each tossing scoreless outings. For George Washington, relievers Reese Crochet and Matt Bruno were effective, with Crochet striking out two over two perfect innings.

Both teams return to action Friday. Georgetown travels to face George Mason, while George Washington hosts Yale.
