Oregon State at Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. (Interstat) — The Oregon State Beavers capitalized on early opportunities and weathered a late rally to defeat the rival Oregon Ducks 10-6 in a nonconference matchup Tuesday night at PK Park.

The game, organized by the Big 10, saw the visiting Beavers improve to 7-4 overall, while the Ducks, who entered with a 10-game winning streak, fell to 10-2.

Oregon State built its lead methodically, breaking through in the third inning. After Elijah Vazquez led off with a solo home run down the left field line, the Beavers added another run on an RBI double by Josh Proctor that scored Mason Talt. They extended the lead in the fifth, scoring three runs, two of which were unearned following a critical Oregon throwing error. Proctor delivered another RBI double, and Noah Singer drove in a run with a sacrifice bunt.

The Beavers put the game seemingly out of reach with a four-run seventh inning. With the bases loaded, catcher Jacob Galloway cleared them with a three-run double to right field, giving Oregon State a commanding 10-1 advantage.

The most important part of the game, however, came in the bottom of the eighth inning as Oregon mounted a serious comeback attempt. Trailing by nine runs, the Ducks sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five times to cut the deficit to 10-6. The rally was highlighted by Angel Laya, who tripled to center field to drive in a run, part of a night where he went 2 for 4 with a home run, a triple and three RBIs. Brady Mabeus followed with an RBI single to plate Laya. The surge forced Oregon State to use three pitchers in the frame before Isaac Yeager entered to record the final out and stop the bleeding.

Oregon State’s pitching staff, despite the late runs, was largely effective in stifling the Ducks’ potent offense for most of the night. Starter Connor Mendez allowed one earned run over two innings. He was followed by a string of relievers who combined for five hitless innings. Noah Scott, Jack Giordano and Trey Morris provided 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief with eight strikeouts before Oregon’s eighth-inning outburst. Yeager and Hudson Carvalho closed out the final 1 1/3 innings without allowing a hit.

Offensively for Oregon State, Proctor led the way, going 3 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs. Galloway finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs.

For Oregon, Laya’s multi-RBI performance and a two-run home run in the sixth inning provided the offensive highlights. RJ Cooney had two of Oregon’s hits.

The result defied the pregame projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 7-5 Oregon victory, though the site’s ELO system gave Oregon State a slight 52.7% probability to win.

Oregon State looks ahead to a four-game home series against Xavier starting Friday. Oregon travels to West Lafayette for a three-game series at Purdue beginning the same day.
