Georgia at Kennesaw State
KENNESAW, Ga. (Interstat) — Dominant pitching and a pair of big innings powered the Georgia Bulldogs to an 11-1 road victory over the Kennesaw State Owls in nonconference baseball action Tuesday night at Fred Stillwell Stadium.
The Bulldogs, ranked among the nation’s leaders in run production, wasted no time, erupting for three runs in the top of the first inning. R. Black led off with a single and scored when Tre Phelps followed with a two-run homer to left-center field. Georgia added another run later in the frame on a sacrifice fly by B. Hudson, staking starter Paul Farley to an early cushion.
Farley, named the top star of the game, made the lead stand with a masterful performance. The right-hander tossed six strong innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits while striking out four. The lone blemish came in the fourth inning when Kennesaw State’s J. Chirello doubled home T. Lyons for the Owls’ only run. Farley effectively silenced the Owls’ bats otherwise, picking off a runner and benefiting from a caught stealing to face the minimum through three innings.
Georgia broke the game open with a five-run outburst in the fifth, capitalizing on a Kennesaw State error. After Henry Allen’s RBI single drove in one run, Jordy Oriach cleared the bases with a three-run double to left-center, pushing the Bulldogs’ advantage to 8-1.
The Bulldogs capped the scoring in the eighth inning when Michael O’Shaughnessy launched a three-run homer to left field, his first of the season.
Brad Pruett relieved Farley and closed the door over the final two innings, allowing no hits and striking out two to preserve the win.
Georgia’s offense collected nine hits, with Allen and Oriach each recording two. Oriach drove in three runs, while O’Shaughnessy also finished with three RBIs. Kennesaw State managed six hits but stranded multiple runners, going 1 for 6 with runners in scoring position.
The loss went to Owls starter Logan Brock, who surrendered three earned runs on five hits over 3 2/3 innings. Kennesaw State relievers Peter Jezerinac and Ryan Renfroe provided bright spots out of the bullpen, combining for 2 2/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts.
The victory improved Georgia’s record to 11-2, while Kennesaw State fell to 5-6. The Bulldogs have now won four straight games and nine of their last ten.
Georgia is scheduled to host Western Carolina on Wednesday. Kennesaw State’s next game is a home series opener against Samford on Friday.
The result exceeded the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast an 8-5 Georgia victory. The Bulldogs entered the contest with a 72.80% win probability according to the service’s ELO system.
