Southern at New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS (Interstat) — The Southern Jaguars and New Orleans Privateers will meet for the second time in eight days Wednesday at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, with both teams seeking momentum after difficult starts to the season.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. under cloudy skies with a game-time temperature near 53 degrees.
New Orleans (2-5) won the first meeting 14-5 on Feb. 18 in Baton Rouge, part of a combined 3-10 record for the two Louisiana programs. Southern (1-5) is coming off a 15-13 road loss to Texas Southern on Saturday, while the Privateers fell 9-1 to Louisiana-Monroe at home Sunday.
A key matchup will feature Southern’s Bobby Spencer, who pitched four scoreless innings of relief in a win at Grambling on Feb. 20, against a New Orleans lineup that tagged him for two earned runs in one inning in the previous meeting. For the Privateers, right-hander Reid Leonard is a player to watch after allowing two earned runs over five innings in a quality start against Louisiana-Monroe.
Offensive consistency has been elusive for both clubs. Southern’s lone win was a 13-3 rout at Grambling, but it has allowed 10 or more runs in four of its five losses. New Orleans has been outscored 42-18 in its five defeats, though it broke out for 14 runs on 15 hits in the win over Southern.
The Interstat game simulator projects a narrow 3-2 victory for the home team.
Following Wednesday’s contest, both teams prepare for three-game weekend series. Southern will host Morehead State starting Friday, while New Orleans opens a set against Stephen F. Austin.
