Caracas vs. Avila

AVILA, Venezuela (Interstat) — The Superliga de Baloncesto’s top team visits a middle-of-the-pack opponent Tuesday when the Caracas Cocodrilos face Avila in a rematch of Friday’s one-point thriller.

Caracas (19-5) holds a commanding lead in the standings, while Avila (14-13) is fighting to stay above .500. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. local time.

The Cocodrilos won the most recent meeting Friday, 68-66, at home. Caracas guard Luis Montero posted 19 points, nine rebounds and two assists in that game. The 6-foot-7 swingman has been a consistent force, averaging 13.4 points and 10.6 rebounds over his last seven games entering Tuesday. In that stretch, Montero recorded four double-doubles, including a 14-point, 14-rebound effort April 28 against the Caracas Spartans.

Avila guard Tim Bond also stood out Friday, scoring 16 points with four rebounds. The 6-4 shooting guard has averaged 10.7 points over his last seven appearances, though his production has varied. Bond scored 16 points in a loss at Carabobo on April 21 but was held to two points against the Falcons two days later.

Tuesday’s game is the fourth head-to-head meeting this season. Caracas leads the series 2-0, having also won 99-87 on April 10 and 76-72 on March 7. The Cocodrilos have won four of their last five games overall, with the lone loss a 71-69 defeat at Maracaibo on May 1. Avila has split its last six contests, alternating wins and losses since April 21.

Caracas has leaned on its depth. In Friday’s victory, center Luis Colon added 16 points and three rebounds, and forward Luis Martinez chipped in 10 points. The Cocodrilos are 9-3 on the road this season.

Avila will look to protect its home court, where it is 8-5. The team has been competitive against top opponents, falling to Caracas by two points in the most recent meeting. Forward Jarell Eddie, who grabbed eight rebounds Friday, and point guard Heissler Guillen (18 points, four assists) provide additional scoring options.

Both teams are coming off a Monday game — Caracas at Avila, result not yet available — but Tuesday’s matchup carries playoff implications as the regular season enters its final weeks.
