Caracas vs. Avila
AVILA, Venezuela (Interstat) — The Caracas Cocodrilos, owners of the league’s best record at 19-5, visit Avila on Monday in a Venezuelan SuperLiga de Baloncesto matchup. Avila enters the contest at 14-13, looking to snap a two-game skid against the Cocodrilos.
The teams met just three days ago, with Caracas edging Avila 68-66 on Friday. Luis Montero led the Cocodrilos in that game with 19 points, nine rebounds and two assists in 34 minutes. Montero has been a consistent force, averaging 16.1 points and 11.9 rebounds over his past seven games. In that stretch, he posted double-doubles in four contests, including a 14-point, 14-rebound effort against Zulia on May 4 and a 13-point, 14-rebound performance against the Caracas Spartans on April 28. He also recorded 17 points and 11 rebounds against Miranda on April 23. Montero, a shooting guard, will be a primary target for Avila’s defense.
For Avila, guard Tim Bond has been the team’s most productive scorer. In Friday’s loss, Bond logged 26 minutes and finished with 16 points, four rebounds and one assist. He has reached double figures in four of his last five games, including a 12-point, five-rebound, four-assist outing against Maracaibo on May 3 and a 13-point, five-rebound, five-assist effort against Portuguesa on April 25. Bond’s ability to create his own shot will be vital if Avila hopes to slow Caracas’s high-powered attack.
Caracas enters Monday having won three of its last four games. After dropping a 71-69 decision at Maracaibo on May 1, the Cocodrilos bounced back with a 81-78 win over Zulia, then beat La Guaira 86-77 on May 6. Avila also owns a 3-1 record over its last four, with wins over Miranda (85-78), the Caracas Spartans (91-88) and Portuguesa (81-76) before Friday’s loss.
The Cocodrilos have dominated the season series, winning two of three head-to-head meetings so far. Their only loss to Avila came on March 7, when Caracas won 76-72 at home. In the April 10 game, Caracas rolled to a 99-87 victory in Caracas.
Caracas will rely on depth beyond Montero. In Friday’s win, Luis Martinez contributed 10 points and six rebounds, while center Luis Colon added 16 points and three rebounds. Avila counters with Heissler Guillen, who had 18 points and four assists on Friday, and Jarell Eddie, who posted 12 points and eight rebounds.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. local time.
